Was his Esquire piece about the building?

No, but both articles started with a description of the building where Caro's office is.

Thanks much, interesting. I can't say I disagree with Knopf's decision, but it would no doubt have produced a fascinating read and perspective.

The Fisk Building is not a beautiful building inside, especially, although Caro's office was comfortable. He's been there 22 years. He has to like it. But the public spaces, especially the hallways, could be nicer than they are. I'm sure they were nicer at one point.

I think the idea of what's beautiful and what's not is pretty interesting, though. I'm an architecture and construction freak, so my view might not jibe with other people's. And in the context of New York, maybe the Fisk Building isn't the most glamorous building—like Boom says, maybe it just pales in comparison. It's not the Chrysler Building. But I think it has beautiful proportions, and I love brick buildings. I think if you put the Fisk Building in Omaha, for instance, it would be the heart of things.

The building across the street, the old Newsweek building that got covered in glass (also in the story), I really preferred the way it was. Other people didn't, obviously. We make everything out of glass now. When was the last time you saw a brick building of any size going up? That's one of the reasons I like brick. Men laid those bricks, one by one. That's amazing if you take a second to stop and think about it.

I think the same thing whenever I go through the tunnels into Manhattan and look at all those rows of white tiles. Someone had to grout those.

Schools are primarily made of brick and cinder block. Anything you want to stand the test of time, you make out of some type of brick or block.

Saw that Tweeted by a couple people.

I have little use for Jones' persona here, and especially for his reactions to the most mild of criticisms.

But I have to think that an accomplished writer finding that he no longer wishes to share his thoughts on writing, is a truly striking loss for those who wish to learn about such things.

Public forums on which successful people regularly share thoughts and tips are few and far between.

    Can't say I blame him.

Maybe shutting down site is a way to protect Jones from himself.

Is it possible that Jones created his own monster by going off intended script from time to time on his blog?

He certainly could not expect that it was going to be a one way street.

A few that come to mind- "Jason Whitlock has no soul", Feud with Scott Raab, rant about not winning National Mag award.

That feud with the brilliant "Scott Bair" that was a real doozy wasn't it, Boom?

Or maybe people being obtuse and talking about a freaking building rather than, you know, the subject of his story or the story itself?

Keep it up, Chris. Even if you no longer want to add to SOBV, it's all part of who you are and how you've evolved. That's important.
