If I had to guess, it's the number of mentally ill people who have been prematurely released from care because of NYC policies.

And the number of mentally-ill homeless people who get bussed to NYC (and other metros) by small towns who don’t want to deal with them.

That's what happens when you elect a cop. Doesn't matter the party. Once a cop, always a cop.

Interesting. Will have to read these.

BTW, watched Anderson Cooper's special Sunday night about homelessness in San Francisco, of particular interest because I'm visiting there in late June for the first time. What California has done in basically incentivizing drug addicts to come there is fucking appalling. They estimated that it now costs upwards of $90,000 per year to maintain one tent for a homeless person, who is also given access to free needles, free food, free health care, etc. It's the worst of liberal policies coming home to roost.

Don't even get me started on the inanity of paying $1.2 million to each Black Californian as reparations. What in the actual fuck.

    This is very fair.

And asks a question especially dear to me.

Why not not just give Neely something to eat and something to drink?

    1) Nobody normal thinks "vigalante killings are an acceptable response to homelessness."

    2) Of course second-degree manslaugher is the right charge. It wasn't a foregone conclusion that common sense would prevail, but it's the only charge that is arguable for anyone who doesn't have a "side."

    3) It's not a slam dunk that he gets (or should get) convicted for manslaughter. He'll have his day in court, and we'll see what the witnesses testify about what happened prior to the chokehold. We'll have to see if he can credibly argue self defense or that he wasn't being reckless with the chokehold.

    4) Nothing to do with that article, but the tribalism around this is what is sickening to me. Everyone is so busy trying to create their own narrative and cast it as the face of an ism. But Neely wasn't trying to be the face of homeless or aggressive / threatening people on the subway or a racial group, and I suspect that Penny didn't set out to be a right-wing cause (although I have no idea what is in this guy's heart). What happened was just tragic.

    5) Also nothing to do with that article, but I took a nice subway ride out to JFK and back Sunday night (don't ask), close to midnight on the ride back home. Depending on your perspective, 1) what I saw on the train going through Bushwick and Bed Stuy and Crown Heights on the ride back was heartbreaking (and I am not talking about one shell of a person who was acting erraticly or mildly threatening, it was a parade of them), or 2) I shouldn't have felt assured of that I was safe. I personally think it was both (that has nothing to do with whether what Penny did in the situation he was in was justifed).

Federal money that allowed Vermont to house 3,000 homeless people from the start of covid till now has dried up.

All 3,000 including +/- 750 kids are being kicked to the streets June 1 and July 1.

If you are donating to this guy’s legal defense fund based on the facts which are known/unknown, you are exactly who I think you are. Then again, these are the same people who call for a ban and film videos shooting up cases of beer because a company dares have a transgender person in their ads.

Two weeks after a Marine vet choked a mentally disturbed homeless man to death on the subway, Mayor Adams advised New Yorkers to call 911 or 311 if they encounter a situation involving someone in a similar state of emotional distress.

“Everyday New Yorkers — they should call the 311 or 911 system if a person is doing something extremely dangerous,” he said during a Tuesday morning interview on NY1. “Proper personnel could respond, and that includes mental health professionals, and in those cases where it’s needed, a law enforcement professional.
