You could make it legal to frisk anyone at any time. Or you could make it legal to lock away anyone who's ever been thought to be difficult or angry or "prone" to mass violence. Those would definitely make it slightly more difficult. Would they be good for the country?

Countries that have stricter gun laws (virtually all) have much, much lower gun violence rates. Apparently the criminals aren't all running around shooting the helpless, unarmed citizens.

In many countries the USA is viewed as the gun-happy Wild West. I used to think that was funny and ignorant.

 

So if guns are made illegal, all the guns out there now will just magically vanish into thin air?

I believe that those people determined to kill someone would have a more difficult time doing so without guns. A perfectly reasonable statement.
