Kindred on Albom receiving this year's Red Smith Award

Ultimately, this is where I land too. There are and were fundamental differences between what Albom did - with the approval of his paper - and what a Jason Blair or a Stephen Glass did. The way the story came out, incidentally, shows that nobody was really trying to hide anything. They were just idiots. That doesn't make it right, and as I've said, it's a permanent stain on his career, but I think most people ignore the distinction simply because Albom is probably the most disliked person in sports journalism right now.

Based on this place, he, Loopy and Eddie Munster form a pretty solid troika... but their crimes are just assholery.

Again, these are all reasonable arguments when deciding whether or not Mitch Albom keeps his job.

But we're not talking about that.

Piotr Rasputin, Sportsjournalists.com's No.1 source for Magic Johnson related HIV and AIDS information.

If Magic really did get AIDS from heterosexual activity, asking him to tell the specific story of how he got it would be like asking a malaria victim which mosquito gave it to him. Isn't there an interview where Magic talks about having sex with seven women in one bed?

Yep I think they talked about it for the last 10 posts.

I understand and respect where Frank's going here, in the realpolitik sense. But.

Was it a fireable offense, by Freep standards? Not when we're talking
about Mitch, it's not. What if someone else had tried to pull that tripe?

When you're in the servile, prone, "whip me, beat me, do what you will"
position the Freep's been in for a long, long time in relation to MA, they're
clearly going to facilitate/enable until the cows come home. And for
pulling that highhanded, presumptive stunt, MA continues to deserve to be hectored and razzed, indefinitely.

A couple of simple google searches yielded the information I posted.

Sorry to bring in some pertinent information counteracting what I thought was a flimsy explanation for a speculative column that helped start a rather historic firestorm. Now everyone can go back to repeating the same arguments regarding Mitch Albom.
