Lacrosse ugliness at U.Va.

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by Moderator1, May 3, 2010.

  1. At this point, I think the best defense is trying to convince somebody it was an accident.
It's a forgone conclusion he killed her. I think the defense is trying to save the kid's life.

  2. The moral trepidation from a defense may be outweighed by the belief that the greater good lies in trying to keep guy from being executed.

  3. Hey, Perry Mason, Jr., there's a big difference between doing "nothing" and running a criminal background check on tens of thousands of applicants to every state university every year. Lugnuts thinks it's a few keystrokes and voila! But multiply that by tens of thousands of applicants. How many George Hugely's does it unearth in an entering class? Also, when I had to submit to a background check for a federal judge, I had to go get fingerprinted. Why couldn't they just look me up? I don't know the answer, but that tells me it's not always as simple as a Westlaw search.

It's an extremely, extremely inefficient waste of resources.

  4. No. Because it can be prevented much more efficiently. We can ban all roads and cars. That would save "one life." Actually, it would save thousands upon thousands, not to mention injuries. Or we can make safer cars. Or lower speed limits to reasonable levels.

We could make the speed limit 20 miles per hour on the expressway. That would save lives. Would you advocate it?

As someone who's not far removed from college, it may not be 20% but it's a hell of a lot higher than it should be. Just from close girl friends I have who graduated last year, I know at least three who were either raped or physically and/or emotionally abused.

Anything is too high, but I would guess 5-10 percent of all guys are abusive in college and the number might triple when you reach the poverty level.

Aspiring Atticus Finch of the Heartland,

I'll play your Socratic game. How many George Huguley's is enough to make it a pertinent use of resources? Four? Seven? Five hundred?

It's pretty easy to argue for the status quo. What's the real world solution here and not the classroom one? Advocating public safety means devoting actual resources or ideas to solve problems, not just stomping your foot and shouting FLAWED, FLAWED, FLAWED! What is the solution? Perhaps Dom Starsia, when Virginia makes it to the Final Four in Baltimore later this month, can swing by Yeardley Love's old house and hold her mom's hand and say "I'm sorry we missed this, and may miss it again in the future because it's not financially prudent have computer science geniuses at our school develop software that could cross check our enrollment records with court databases. Oh well. While I'm here, are you interesting in contributing to our Capital Fund? We need to figure out a way to pay for Al Groh's buyout."

You've accused Lugnuts of being overly-reactionary and emotional in her arguments, and yet on this thread you've implied people want to bar anyone convicted of any crime from going to college, or throw anyone convicted of any crime out of college and thus preventing them from incredibly important privilege that is amateur athletics, which no one on this thread has argued at any point. It is the equivalent of hysterically shouting, in response to proposals for a five-day waiting period for buying a handgun, "IF YOU BAN GUNS THAN ONLY THE CRIMINALS WILL HAVE GUNS! SEE HOW YOU LIKE THAT!"

SportsJournalists.com is the place where nuance goes to die, including, apparently, in your own brain. I suspect -- actually, I hope -- clerking for a federal judge requires a higher standard of security than, say, looking for DUIs or resisting arrest charges, which IS as easy as Lugnuts pointed out. But the federal judge clerking background check was a nice straw man you sewed together to not only argue the extreme, but also felate yourself in front of us all. Win-win!

Again, what solutions would you propose? If the answer is none, and you are comfortable as a shameless advocate for the rights of the shithead athletes George Huguleys instead of the people unlucky enough to cross their paths at public universities, that's fine. Just own it.

If the "Dad thing" and the "You're jealous of my genius and insecure about your path in life!" is the best you've got, we should just get Mills Lane to call this one already.

But if Socratic Guy wants to go a few more rounds, I'm game. If you can get you own cock out of your mouth for a second, the substance of my post remains unanswered.

Well it seems a grumpy "you dad sucks and you're jealous" post was deleted.

DD, are you advocating that Hugeley shouldn't be in school or shouldn't play sports?

That's fine, but nobody needs to call that an honest way to make a living.
