Lane Kiffin Pre-Press Conference Drama

My point is that one guy was taking a stand.

Several print reporters probably didn't give a crap about rules regarding videotaping except perhaps theoretically as a show of journalistic solidarity.

Others -- presumably who wanted to go live or tape the whole thing were quick to agree.

Now, if you want to say they were all better off abiding by the rules, perhaps.

But one guy never agreed and Kiffin still showed up and did his song and dance.

Not sure what I am in fantasyland about.

I'm still waiting for Kiffin to open up and tell us from the heart about why he left. I'm blaming TV. I guess the print guys weren't as buddy-buddy with Kiffin as they thought.

Did the print guys claim to be buddy-buddy with Kiffin?

That's kind of the point about why Kiffin was trying to control the TV cameras. This has nothing to do with who in that room was right or wrong about agreeing to the demands. But it does get to the heart of why Kiffin was trying to take editorial control of the TV stations. He knew exactly what stories and columns were going to be in the paper the next day. I guess he figured that maybe he had nothing to lose in trying to mitigate the "he's a snake" columns by making nice a little with the writers. He also knew that way more people would be impacted by video of him talking if it existed than by the newspapers, and he wanted to limit the video taken so in case he looked bad, people wouldn't be able to see it with their own eyes. If he botched his camera time somehow, things would show up on TV that a writer could never capture the same way in a story. Transcribe Richard Nixon's debate against Kennedy and read it, and you get a different story than you did if you watched it with your own eyes.

That, and the fact that he didn't want to bother tucking in his friggin' polo shirt.

Just about thinking that taking this particular stand is going to make the situation any better.

As I said, I agree in theory with this guy, that he and all the media are getting shafted by Kiffin. I just think if you take this stand without budging, it's more likely that he'd say: "Ok, then screw you all" than "Oh, you guys are right. I'll do it your way."

It's in this thread of the one on the sports and news board, but a beat writer said that Kiffin would just open up without cameras? Do any big-time coaches give out cell phone numbers to trusted beat writers? I assume some would.

I would not have taken the stand. I would have ignored the request and filmed him.

A coach can open up a little bit without being "buddy-buddy" with the reporters.

As for telling any SID one thing and then doing whatever you darn well please ... sure if that's the last thing you ever hope to cover there. SIDs aren't obligated to credential your outlet, so next fall when you say "We need three football credentials" he says "Sorry, already issued all we are allowed. Try back next year."

Yup. Point I was trying to make. Even if you know you are pissing him off, be up front at least. Worst thing you can ever do is screw with your word.

Sure you have to pick your battles.

But you also have to read between the lines.

Is the SID saying this because this is what the coach told him to do and he is happy just saying his piece, doesn't care if you follow it or not and just wants deniability?

Is the SID really going to bust balls about how you treated a coach who left after one season?
