And had been saying it for five years at the height of George Michael's near-constant MTV airplay.

The BBC has quite a thorough obit. Maybe they were more prepared for it.

Think this is much bigger on the other side of the pond. Like Phil Collins.

Makes sense, since he was British. Might not be as big over there as it will be here when, say, Springsteen kicks it.

1987-88 was big for Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins (really), and U2. (Strangely not Madonna, though; she was between albums.)

But George Michael was churning out as many or more hits as all of them. During this time he had five No. 1 singles in the U.S.: "I Knew You Were Waiting" (duet with Aretha Franklin), "Faith", "Father Figure", "One More Try", and "Monkey." Additionally, "I Want Your Sex" peaked at No. 2.

In that stretch - mid-1987 to early 1989, George Michael was probably in the slot just under Michael Jackson (he released Bad in summer 1987). George Michael and Whitney Houston were the biggest stars in the biz after MJ for that stretch.

I didn't fully come around on George Michael until my early 20s. Appreciated the tortured soul he was after Faith.

Wait, if he was "found" then how do they know he died "peacefully"?

The English singer, songwriter, and record producer who rose to fame with the group Wham! was found on Christmas morning.

In a statement to the BBC, the star's publicist said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."
