Having read the book, Gone Girl felt tedious. It was nothing new really from the book, and the book wasn't good enough (like NCFOM was) that I needed to see a two and a half hour reproduction of it.

Hmmm. I feel the exact opposite. Thought it was horrible. The score was awful, the writing was worse. Thought character development was REALLY poor. Mind you, I never read the book, but I just don't see what the hype is about. I actually think that the fact the author wrote the screen play is a bad thing; she likely doesn't know how to write for the screen and tries to accommodate as closely to the book as she can.

That was 2 1/2 hours of crap, IMO.

Maybe that's why Affleck went on Maher to argue for the honor of Islam, to deflect attention from the movie.

    Two great docs on DirecTV:

Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff
    The 50 year argument

The first is self-exaplnatory, the second is about the New York Review of Books.
    Both good.

Late last night on Starz Comedy I once again took in Top Secret! Someone noted they thought it was even better than Airplane!, but I would disagree with that.

Lots of good gags in Top Secret!, but I would label the movie as fun and silly, while I'd still call Airplane! actually funny. People are still quoting lines from Airplane!, not so much with Top Secret!.

I can't figure out what "The Judge" is supposed to be. Every trailer makes it look like a different film. One looks like a comedy with Downey as a wisecracking lawyer butting heads with his equally stubborn father, another looks like a taut courtroom drama, and so on. I've seen at least four trailers that all look totally different.

Reminds of me "Silver Linings Playbook," which I thought was a comedy until I saw it. I really enjoyed the movie but it took me 30-40 minutes to realize it wasn't a comedy.

The Judge might be classified as a dramedy. There are definitely several intentionally funny moments. You will laugh more than you expect during The Judge but it also has its sentimental moments. There are excellent performances from both Billy Bob Thornton and Robert Downey Jr.
The Judge is not a great movie, but it is a solid film that will toy with your emotions because of its complex characters.

Count me as another who loved "Gone Girl". Thought it captured the book perfectly and the acting was terrific. I particularly liked Affleck and Kim Dickens as the female detective.

Pride is the first slam-dunk best picture Oscar-worthy film of 2014. It might be the best movie of 2014. Pride is an emotionally powerful film that has Oscars written all over it. It's just phenomenal. It's sad to think there is a group of people who won't see Pride, thinking it's a "gay movie" and instead will miss a wonderful tale of solidarity.

I saw "This is Where I Leave You"

A bit over the top, but good acting and watchable.

Saw Gone Girl tonight with Mrs. OOP. We fell somewhere in between Den and Jay. We didn't hate it, but we both thought it was way too long.

Some excellent moments and some cringe-worthy ones. Some of the cringing was clearly intentional, but sometimes the dialogue was just too clever.
