Sundance showed Dustin Hoffman in back-to-back flicks last night -- The Graduate, followed by Tootsie. Enjoyed both quite a bit. Jessica Lange was really adorable back then.

Finally saw "Guardians of the Galaxy." Not a huge fan of comic book flicks, but it was enjoyable as long as you didn't try to figure out all the mumbo-jumbo about the magic sphere. A few deep tracks from the 1970s (instead of the usual 10 songs) helped.

Yeah, that stuff about the sphere is for the comic fans and those following the ongoing storylines in the MCU movies. Better for everybody else to glaze over until the fun stuff starts back up.

I was going to see American Sniper tonight, but got there at 7 when it was starting at 7:15 and people were coming back asking for refunds because the only seats available were in the first or second row. So we passed on that and went with The Imitation Game and I'm glad I saw it. Nicely done.

I wasn't going to see American Sniper but there were seven showings at the theater I went to and five of them were sold out on Sunday. I was kinda surprised at that because I've never seen that place be full for that many showings.

Saw American Sniper and Blackhat over the weekend.

American Sniper: I thought it was really good, though it felt a lot like The Hurt Locker to me. There are a lot of arguments about how just the cause was, and I know the movie was met with a lot of derisive "'Murica, fuck yeah," but what stood out to me is the sacrifice soldiers make.

Blackhat: I wanted to like this movie, but it might be the slowest-moving action thriller I've ever watched. I don't invoke pacing very often, but this one struggled mightily with it.

    American Sniper did $90M. Whoa.

Yeah, I definitely did not see that coming.

Loved the movie, but that's Superhero movie money. I'm thrilled, but stunned.

Almost without fail I wait for movies to come to HBO or Starz or Showtime, but the commercials drew me in so well that I am close to picking a night and going to see American Sniper in the theater.

Yeah, a $90 million opening in January says a hell of a lot. They film has certainly gotten some press and some buzz, but that number really came out of nowhere. Seems like word of mouth is strong enough that it's going to follow with another good weekend this week.

I'm hoping to see it late this week or early next week.

I watched "Runner Runner," starring Affleck and Timberlake the other day. It was a decent 90 minutes. Didn't break any new ground, but it was sort of "The Firm," "Rounders" and maybe a little "Boiler Room" rolled into one. If it had been 2 hours, you'd walk away disappointed, but for 90 minutes, it was entertaining, if a little predictable in spots.

Watched Wolf of Wall Street the other day. What a weird movie.
