Saw Deadpool over the weekend. Pretty funny. I am over traditional superhero movies pretty much but this was good.

Liked the banter and the "how old are you?" jokes.

I think Morena Baccarin is beautiful. Glad to see her cast as the love interest instead on some 20-year-old.

The baddie wasn't very convincing as some kind of scientist, but whatever.

Ryan Reynolds does better in roles the more smart ass the character is supposed to be.

Race. I wouldn't say it was quite as well-done as 42, but I really enjoyed it. Wasn't as familiar with Owens' story (or that of Avery Brundage) as I was with Jackie Robinson's, so it was fairly informative, too. The bit with the German long-jumper was really interesting.

I was disappointed with '10 Cloverfield Lane.'
It seemed a bit like 'Take Shelter' with space aliens at the end.
Also, Ramona Flowers' character seemed really smart. I can't believe that she would ever believe a shower curtain and duct tape would protect her from chemical/bio tainted atmosphere or nuclear fallout.

  4. Bridge of Spies.
It was good, but hardly riveting.
Hanks, was very good, but the story IMO lacked tension, conflict. There was very threat of anything. I was just watching a story play out. No high drama.

The Resurrection of Jake the Snake Roberts.
    Another "eh."
I liked Beyond the Mat, way better.
I have little to no tolerance for addicts trying to get clean with two hours of tears, lies and whining. I like Roberts and after watching BTM, I felt sorry for him. During this movie - and still have about 30 minutes left - I do not.
Its hard for me to muster any more sympathy for him or Scott Hall, who I never cared for.

That said, Diamond Dallas Page is a stand up fucking guy. That's a man who values friendship and loyalty.

I can't believe I totally forgot she was in it. She was worth the price of admission by herself.

    Finally saw 'The Force Awakens.'
It was ok, very paint-by-numbers derivative of original 'Star Wars.'
Certainly better than the three prequels, but that is damning with faint praise.

Took little OOP to see "Finding Dory." It was cute and entertaining, but not on the level with the original. There are some characters who are clearly there just so Disney can sell some more toys and some of the action sequences are even more over-the-top ridiculous.

  8. I Am Thor... Documentary of heavy metal almost-weres and their "comeback."

It's hilarious - much of in unintentionally. So many "This is Spinal Tap" moments.
    Holy shit, very entertaining.
    Highly recommended

DVD bin: The Rewrite with Hugh Grant and Marissa Tomei. Good cast (JK Simmons, Alison Janney, etc.), harmless little (and occasionally funny) rom-com. Three out of five, IMHO.

I just returned from Independence Day Resurgence. I do not understand the seething hate of some reviews at all. I'd read a few reviews (though not EW's) yesterday and today before seeing it, so maybe my expectations were lowered enough for me to like it. I thought it was a worthy successor and decent film for the genre.

The story moves along quickly (the introduction part the EW review blasts did not seem too long to me), I liked the story and how they weaved the old and new characters. And frankly, I find the "disaster porn" a misplaced label to this film, especially compared to the likes of Emmrich's 2012, Man of Steel or either the first Avengers or Ultron. Personally, I thought plot points were explained clearly and succinctly, including what the EW mentions
about why the aliens are drilling
(it was very clearly explained near the end of the second act).

I also re-watched the original Independence Day on HBO sometime in the last week when I came across it. One complaint I've seen recently is the original effects look bad and dated. They stil looked damn good to me on a 42" Vizio.
