I was looking forward to it - and by all means it "looked" like an important Western. But A) would have been better if Bale's character were older, B) it's one thing for a movie to take a "solemn tone" - it's another when it infects all of the characters.

Saw Crazy Rich Asians last night. Really fun movie with a likeable cast. It seems perfectly set up for sequels.

The plot -- grown men playing tag -- seemed like it had a lot of promise?

The trailer made Tag seem it would be really, really funny.

Rewatched Godfather 1 & 2. Pacino was so good at emoting without saying anything. That was Caan's best work ever.

I saw Free Solo last night at TIFF—the documentary about Alex Honnold's rope-free climb of El Capitan. That climb is one of the most amazing things I've seen. I was sweating so hard. At one point, during a particular risky part of the ascent, the guy next to me let out a loud groan and put his head on my shoulder. I did not know this man. Total stranger.

It's incredible. I will not be shocked to see it nominated for the Best Doc Oscar this year. In fact, I'd be shocked if it isn't.

I love watching climbing documentaries — from the safety of my couch. I'm not afraid of heights, but there's no way in the world I would ever attempt even a fraction of a fraction of what Honnold does.

A year ago or so I saw a Discovery Channel (?) documentary on climbing El Capitan, starting with the first people who scouted routes and used ropes and anchors. It took them days and days to ascend. The last part was about Honnold and how he free climbed the thing in, like, just a few hours. The dude is the best free climber ever and might never be topped.

Another good climbing documentary I saw is Meru. It's one thing to climb, but it's another to climb and film the whole thing.

It's amazing what our fragile species can do.
