Lightyear. Good, but not really great. My six-year-old, who usually loves animated movies, was sort of bored. Not big laughs or cheers. My wife cried at one point. It was nice to learn where the buzz character came from, but it was mostly ok.

Watched "War for the Planet of the Apes" (reboot version) with family this week. Really interesting story, deep social commentary and Serkis as Caesar is amazing.

I like to watch old movies, and was reminded again of why that is. Oftentimes, they're so good, with truly talented performing and entertaining, par excellence.

The latest that would get a rave review on that basis is "Till the Clouds Roll By," a 1946 film about the life of Broadway-musicals composer/songwriter Jerome Kern, who died in late 1945, just before the production was completed.

The movie was a full-blown musical, itself, with an all-star cast that included June Allyson, Judy Garland, Van Heflin, Van Johnson (who was a well-known actor to me, but I'd had no idea he could sing and dance the way he did in this film), Lena Horne and Frank Sinatra, who was 30 and so young as to be nearly unrecognizable.

They sang many of Kern's songs from Broadway shows, and the colorized film almost felt like a live-show performance -- a rousing one -- despite its being 76 years old.

Serkis is one of a handful of actors who can put a paper bag over his head and give it the appearance of awareness and soul.
If that sort of thing interests you...

Watched A Quiet Place 2 yesterday. There was little payoff to seeing the monsters that soon. The kids are amazing. Emily Blunt isn't given very much to do. Cillian Murphy has more screen parent energy than Blunt. Then again, maybe his character is less tired. The first one spoiled me for the sequel. Also, there is a huge ethical plot-hole.

Last Night in Soho. I am a huge Edgar Wright fan, so I had long wanted to see this and it didn't disappoint.

Awesome cinematography, cool 60s vibes, great soundtrack and Anya Taylor-Joy is absolutely stunning.

Finally, got the chance to see Top Gun: Maverick today, and was not a bit disappointed. And I'm glad I saw it in the theater.

Really liked Val Kilmer's brief scene, chuckled at how the nerdy guy's call sign was "Bob" (And could immediately tell who Lewis Pullman's dad was), and Jennifer Connelly as a love interest is always a plus. Oh, yeah, and the fighter jet footage was top notch.

    Well worth the wait.
