    Saw "Public Enemies" today.

Basically, it was Johnny Depp and Christian Bale running and driving around for 2 1/2 hours shooting at each other. No character development. Absolutely none.

What in Dillinger's past led him to become a bank robber?
Why did he fall so madly in love with his girlfriend and stay so loyal to her?
Why was Melvin Purvis so driven to bring Dillinger to justice, other than because it was his job?

We never learn the answers to these questions, because Michael Mann doesn't seem to care. He's much more interested in tired, stylized violence and chase scenes.

    I expected better.

Seems to me it works better as a stage play.

While waiting to go to dinner, I caught the last half of "50 First Dates." I couldn't turn it off.

This summer I've been bored off my ass by Christian Bale as John Connor and Johnny Depp as John Dillinger. I didn't think that would ever be possible.

Totally agree. Although there are worse things than looking at Johnny Depp for 2.5 hours.

I saw "Funny People" last night and really, really liked it. I don't normally like Adam Sandler, but he was pretty great. It was a little too long and it didn't always work, but I definitely recommend it.

Went to see Public Enemies, a two-hour plus running time in an air-conditioned theater was all I needed.
Not going to disagree with those who weren't moved by the plot, would have liked to have known more about how Bale and Depp's characters got to that point in their lives, but the shootout in the woods was the best one I've seen in film since Blackhawk Down. Mann has a way of shooting a movie (with Dante Spinotti) that is extremely involving. The detail of the production design was phenomenal, hard to believe banks once looked like that. Some great character parts, enjoyed just seeing the expressions on the faces of some of the background actors. I couldn't help but think people like Donald Trump and Howard Stern are the Dillingers of today.

"Rachel Getting Married" and "Milk" on consecutive days. I preferred the latter, though I liked the Oscar-winning documentary more than Sean Penn's fictionalized (?) version.

I still haven't seen the "Star Trek" resurrection. Guess I'll be waiting for the DVD. :-\
