My brother lent me the Battle Of Algiers DVD set. Lord, it's going to take me three weeks just to watch all of it. There's the movie, several documentaries on it, a disc devoted to the history of the French-Algerian War, etc.

I watched a half-hour of the movie last night. Pretty damn good so far.

'The Battle of Algiers' is fantastic. I don't know anything about the boxed set, but the movie's great.

Fascinating movie. Apparently they screened it at the Pentagon to give officers an idea of what they were up against in Baghdad. "Z" is pretty good too.
I'm watching Meet John Doe right now. Capra made it in 1941 but it could have come out last month. Surprised it hasn't been remade.
Opening scene: An oil bigwig buys a paper, starts laying off people left and right. Says he wants "fireworks." A reporter who is being laid off makes up a story about a guy who is threatening to kill himself because he's sick of government corruption. When the story generates a lot of public interest, and the managing editor realizes it is fake, he decides to go forward with the story and find someone to "become" John Doe.
I could see this being remade very easily.

Watched two DVDs lately, and certainly not memorable flicks on the whole... but both had a piece that made me laugh hilariously.

First, "Made of Honor," the Patrick Dempsey flick in which his female friend asks him to be her maid of honor. Not bad, but they end up a the fiancees' home in Scotland, when an aunt asks in heavily accentic gaelic if they'll name their first child "Athol." Sounds like asshole. Starts a whole riff that includes "We're come from a long line of Athols." Giggle, giggle.

Second, "My Mom's New Boyfriend," a straight-to-DVD movie (I think) with Meg Ryan, Antonio Banderas and Colin Hanks. Picked it up because I was intrigued by the Ryan-Hanks teaming, since dad Tom was a staple with Ryan for so long. Not very good, but there's an Italian chef who the mom (Ryan) dumped, who continues throughout the movie to get drunk and stand in front of her house begging for her to come back. Played by Enrico Colantoni ("Flashpoint"). Turns out to be the funniest thing in the movie. He's hilarious.

Watched "Miss March", a comedy I only saw one trailer for but knew right away I'd enjoy on DVD. I liked it. It had a couple of big laugh moments and a somewhat unpredictable plot and that made up for the holes in the script and the lack of boobs.

Worth a rental if you're into those types of flicks (I.E. Road Trip, Eurotrip, Sex Drive, e.t.c)

Saw Answer Man tonight. Not a thing believable about it, all quirks and meet-cutes. But Lauren Graham again is a revelation and will again be the cause of BYH's carpal tunnel syndrome

Observe and Report - How exactly did this get made? I'm not saying it's a completely terrible film, but if Judd Aptow was not involved with this project it would not even get a sniff at even the most bizarre film festivals.

I haven't seen that yet, I heard it was another one of those films where the best scenes were in the previews.

"Great Silence", good spaghetti almost ruined by bad dubbing (they gave Klaus Kinski a ridiculous southern accent)...It was directed by Sergio Corbucci who later went on to direct the early 80s HBO staple "Super Fuzz".
