Just finished watching Con-Air on TV for about the 100th time. Still love it. Completely unbelieveable, yes. Full of corn, yes. But so many great lines (i.e. "Well hooray for the sounds of fucking silence") and filled with mindless action. Great way to spend an evening -- well for me an evening, for most the wee hours of the morning.

That and Monica Potter was rediculously hot in that movie.

And District 9 was one of the most overrated movies of the summer. It was good (I give it 3 out of 5), but not near as good as many have said it is. I cannot get over a fatal flaw in its plot that just bugs the hell out of me (and this is even with existing within the reality that is provided by the movie) I will not say more because for those who haven't seen it, I do not want to ruin it.

Well, full disclosure time I guess: I'm seeing it in the "Unrated" DVD version.

Don't know about theatrical, but in the "unrated" we've got full frontal off and on for about 2 minutes during the breakup, including when the dude springs off the couch (hence, flopping). As for the rubbing up, it's not like we've got slow-mo closeups of his schlong grinding the costars, but in both cases he's hugging them au natural... I mean, I'm sure in reality they used a modesty sock, but... creeped me out a bit.

    Watched "Jennifer's Body."

    Very corny and bland. 2.5/5.

    Although Fox is incredibly hot.

So glad I am not the only one who thinks so. I thought he was fabulous in Zodiac, which I loved.

    Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
Way better than it ought to be.

Tyson. Got it at Redbox. And yet, I really don't know how I felt about it. In some ways he was sympathetic, in some ways he was just pathetic, and in most ways I just wondered why someone like him draws breath.

So I don't know what the filmmaker was going for, but if it was something other than 'What a jackass of a stupid idiot half-man, half-boy that guy is' then it failed for me.

Also, stop saying gonorrhea, Mike. We get it.

Whip It. (doesn't open till Friday).

I have been anticipating this movie since seeing the preview 3 months ago. It opens Friday; gotta wait till Monday to see it (next day off).

Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, and according to this review, Ellen Page nails the role, and maybe even better than she did in Juno and Hard Candy.

Great review by Variety is making me hungrier to see it.

Edit: It also has Zoe Bell, from Tarantino's Death Proof. Big fan of hers.

Edit II: This Rotten Tomato didn't like it, but loved Page (and who wouldn't?).

    an unfinished life ...

    redford, freeman, j-lo, josh lucas.

it's ok. set in the pretty country of wyoming, about an abused mother who escapes the abuser in iowa and finds refuge with the daughter's grandfather (the son died one night in calgary in a 3 a.m. car wreck. she was driving, and redford has neither gotten over it nor forgiven j-lo for the death). grandfather has never met 12-year-old granddaughter till now, either. the story is about forgiveness and such, and has expected plotlines like the abuser tracking down j-lo before redford plays hero and beats his ass and sends him back to iowa. there's a bear, too, which mauled freeman, and which serves as the central metaphor for the main players.

becca gardner is pretty good as the daughter.

yeah, late to the party with this one. a lot of things i liked about it, mcconaughey being one of them. really liked the scene when mcconaughey and fox go to morgantown to study the veer, and bowden looks at 'em incredulously yet gives them full access to the films.

i was 9 days old when the '71 team played its first game. i didn't really like the direction McG took with that game, but it's his movie.

didn't really like ian mcshane's role, either.

all in all, an emotional, uplifting story.
