Or the one where he gets Kate Winslet to say that the only way she'll be able to win an Oscar is by playing in a Holocaust movie or by playing "a mental"... Gold.

Movie is flat-out poorly lit in stretches.

To me, 9.9 is patently ridiculous.

It's easier to appreciate this particular piece of art if you care.

For those who do, cheers to you.

    Most don't.

Well, to me, the movie hits as close as perfect as a movie I've ever seen. I think it has all the components of a masterpiece--great, compelling story, interesting and well developed characters, drama, high-stakes action.

I understand why some may not like it--hell, I think Animal House, Scarface and Citizen Kane are all overrated pieces of crap I'd prefer to never, ever see again--but to me, they're an amazing experience on the screen.

Am I saying they're the greatest movies of all-time? Not quite. The greatest of the last decade? No doubt, hands down.

You gave it a 9.9... How could it not be among "the greatest movies of all time" for you?

    The original Scarface was good.

The Pacino version is a dirtbag-pandering piece of offal.

Saw "It's Complicated" last night. Well acted by Streep and Baldwin, otherwise simply average. No bite to the writing and the parts for Streep's kids and Martin were way too one-note worship of Streep.

For those who saw it -- it really bugged me that Baldwin's stepson was not his son. Rather than show the real consequences of his actions, they try to avoid it though silly writing.

Sorry, I really don't understand what either of those statements mean

What difference does it make if it's Jake's stepson? How exactly would making the character his natural son be an improvoement?

And what do you mean "show the real consequences of his actions"

I didn't think the writing was silly at all. It was nice to see an adult romantic comedy that wasn't full of cliches.

Just got done watching it and I feared the worst, but it really wasn't all that bad. Dealt more with general loneliness than marriage/kids.

That was my take on "Up in the Air" (which I loved, by the way). I don't think it said you couldn't be happy without marriage and kids. The point was you need to connect. Clooney's character had lost touch with this family and didn't even have any friends.

Because when I rate a movie, I rate it based on what I thought of it as a film and my enjoyment of it.

It's like when I listen to a CD that I know, deep down, isn't some masterful work of art. I may still rate it an 8 or 9 because I liked it.

It's how I can rate something like 2012 higher than Munich or Saving Private Ryan. Is it a better film? No, probably not. But did I like it better? Definitely.

LOTR, as one film, hit all the right notes with me. A 9.9 is exactly how I feel about the films from a personal level. If you're asking me to evaluate them objectively and take away my fanboiness, they're probably an 8 for Fellowship, a 7.5 for Two Towers and an 8.3 for ROTK and, as one work of art, an 8.5.

I think the one cruel plot twist at the end nearly squashed any good will that came out of it. And isn't Clooney like sort of playing himself in this one? In some regards he is that guy in real life.
