I loved 'Doubt,' but I don't understand why Amy Adams gets knocked by many people.
She does not command the screen like Streep or Hoffman do, but I don't think she has to have a commanding screen presence to be a good actress.
In particular with 'Doubt,' it was appropriate that her character is dwarfed by the other two. That is part of the dynamic among the characters.
I think she's good. She just isn't a big or commanding presence.

She was an extraneous character in Julie & Julia, and because she was she almost ruined the movie, but that isn't her fault.

Doubt couldn't have portrayed a small, insular, tri-state Catholic parish in the yesteryear any better if it tried.

I agree about 'Julie and Julia,' but I don't blam the actress, either. The entire modern-day plot was extraneous, and the husband and wife characters were unlikeable.
I think she's a good actress, based on what I've seen her in. She's just not the kind of actress who is going to dominate the screen.

Gotta disagree, my love. Amy Adams has done some great stuff, including "Doubt". I thought she was note perfect in that part. I don't blame her for "Julie & Julia" ... she played the part as written and it just wasn't on the page. Viola Davis, on the other hand, was wonderful in "Doubt". Completely deserving of all the kudos she received.

She is very pleasant to look at.

I loved her in "Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day." But I also love Lee Pace enough to cancel out everything else. :D

I've seen Sherlock Holmes get plenty of "thumbs down" here, but I redboxed it last nite and thought it was pretty damned good. Certainly not the stodgy old Holmes — "...AND WHAT OF THE WARTS!? WERE THEY EXTENSIVE?!?" — had me laughing pretty hard at times.

Without turning this into a domestic spat, to quote Dorothy Parker, Amy Adams "runs the gamut of emotions from A to B"

If she were a hockey player she'd either be on the fourth line or in the AHL. :)

And great actors can transcend the part as written. Johnny Depp does it regularly.

I really liked Sherlock Holmes. I couldn't believe Jude Law was actually funny in it and I thought he and Downey made a very likable pair. Of course, I'd watch Downey read the phone book.

I think you're too hard on her.
She's not great, but she's good.

Exactly. She was really good in "Enchanted" and good in the other things I've seen her in.
