star trek vi ... on a kick to go through some of them recently, for some reason. hadn't seen it since around the time it came out, so much be nearing 20 years. fun to catch some of the folks in it that I had no clue were there. kim cattrall and rene auberjonois were two - just didn't remember them. but surprising to me was kurtwood smith (that 70s show) and christian slater, whose character doesn't even have a name, with all of two lines.

Christian Slater is/was a huge Star Trek/Star Wars nerd. By the time that movie came out, Slater was a "big" star. He just wanted a little cameo because he was such a fanboi looser. His mom's a casting director and I think she helped him get the cameo.

    My Bloody Valentine: 3D.

Fun. Fun. Fun horror movie. Doesn't try to take itself seriously, the directors know what it is, pure slasher fun. Great kills and I had never seen a movie in 3D before and it was a treat, especially with some of the kills that literally pop out at you. It had some homages to the original 1981 flick as well, which if you've seen, you'll find yourself secretly smiling at.

Gotcha (1985) This college kid goes to Europe and falls for this woman who convinces him to go to East Germany with her to pick up a package.

I guess it counts as a movie since it was a DVD.....

Artie Lange: It's the Whiskey Talking.

Not a terrible set but far from good. Lange is hilarious on the Stern show but on this DVD comes across looking thirty minutes from death. How you let yourself get that bad is beyond me.

He did have some funny one-liners but really, if you're a fan of classic Carlin or sets like that, pass.

    5/10.

I watched The Wackness recently. Great film and I highly recommend giving it a watch. Top-notch East Coast hip-hop soundtrack (Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Biz Markie, etc.), great acting from Ben Kingsley and Josh Peck (?!), stylish visuals, and very entertaining throughout. Extremely depressing.

If anything else, you get to see the 65-year old Kingsley plow Michelle Tanner.

Watched Gran Torino. Real solid. Can't believe it didn't get any Oscar nods.

I really liked the girl who played the stepdaughter/girlfriend. She was also in Juno.

Saw The Wrestler last night. It was good, but didn't blow me away. Honestly, I can't understand all the hype. Marisa Tomei, I thought, was the best of the lot. Rourke gave a good performance, but Oscar-worthy???? Golden Globe-winning performance? Meh.

Very good movie. Had Anthony Edwards, I believe.

Gone Baby Gone. Did the impossible: made Morgan Freeman look as if he were there just for the paycheck. Very disappointing.

Land of the Dead. And the Romero series jumps the shark ...

I'll watch Diary of the Dead just to say I've watched all five of them.

Again, it's the Sly Stallone question: Does a dumb guy playing a dumb guy great make a great acting performance?

(Note: This was also known as the Arnold Schwarznegger question prior to recent California election trends.)

Watched "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" on Wednesday night. Probably as good as anything else Kevin James has done. That's not a ringing endorsement. But it's a diversion.
