Went to see "Piranha" (3D version) with the wife yesterday. Not great, but it had its moments as a fun horror movie. Lots of gore, lots of tits (often in 3D!), and the climactic piranha attack on Lake Havasu Victoria (a.k.a., "Douchebag Apocalypse 2010").
    A few thoughts ...
    1) The opening scene has a great little joke with Richard Dreyfuss in a boat singing the "Show me the way to go home" song from Jaws, right before he becomes the first victim.
    2) People in this movie can hold their breath a really, REALLY long time.
    3) Seeing Elisabeth Shue as a 40-something MILF sheriff was depressing on a couple of levels.
    4) I was pleasantly surprised that the CGI wasn't overdone. The fish were all CGI, of course, and looked it. But most of the gore looked like makeup effects, which was nice to see.

For my last Saturday night before college football season, I treated myself to this double-feature: Bug and Hard Candy. Somehow, I slept well.

We saw 'Bug' in the theater and it wasn't set up right. We could see the mic in several scenes. It was so bad it was distracting.

Rewatched "Contact", the 1997 Jodie Foster film.

I don't know why but, for some reason, I love this flick and pick up new things every time I see it.

Solid, solid movie, even if the ending was something I couldn't understand fully until the 12th time I watched it.

I admit the ending didn't live up to the awesome premise of the movie but the "suicide religious attack" still haunts me the same way now as it did when I first saw it.

This is one of the few movies I'd love to see remade though. But, with my luck, they'd cast DJ Pauly D in the main role and upon first contact with the aliens, he'd be like "You bitches ready to fist pump?"

You should read the book, if you haven't already. Goes off in a lot of other directions ... for one thing, in the book, there are other travelers.

And the ending is a kick in the ass.

"A Face in the Crowd." – Classic, still wildly underrated. You'll never look at Andy Griffith the same after seeing him as Lonesome Rhodes.

Bad Lieutenant -- the new one. Terrible.
Death at a Funeral -- Meh. Not great, but not a waste of 90 minutes either.

Watched most of the new Spike Lee Katrina documentary on HBO (though since it was four hours long, so I did miss a minute here and there to run to the bathroom and/or refrigerator). Outstanding, though not quite as powerful as the last one.

I think I may have been the last person in the world to finally see Avatar. Saw it last night. About what I expected.

I caught some of that a few weeks ago, and it was fascinating. A lot of people fantasize about winning a huge amount of money, but they have no idea what they'd do if they did. I think most have an idea what they'd do with the money; few, I'm guessing, have a clue what they'd do with their time.

Saw some of Car 54 Where Are You? this morning. What a goofy-assed movie.
