I thought the pacing was bad. That was my major complaint.
As for the script, I thought the Damon storyline was good, but I thought the French journalist was impossible to believe and the little boy's storyline was too saccharine.
I like Eastwood's stark style, and it almost worked here. I think it could have used a stronger gold-coin moment late in the second act to carry me through.

The problem I really had with it was that there was no point to it.

If the whole movie is about coming to grips with death and learning to move on, why would Damon's character want anything to do with the French journalist?

The one thing they have in common is the one thing he's trying to distance himself from because he wants a normal life.

And the boy? The only thing the boy wanted was his brother, or perhaps the chance to say goodbye to his brother. He got that via Damon's reading but, at the end of it, he's still by himself.

Watched "Black Dynamite" on one of the Encore channels late last night. Just an incredibly fun movie that never tries to be anything else. Like all great parodies, it pokes fun at a genre more than any specific movie or film and hits all the right notes. Had to put my hand over my mouth a few times to keep from waking the wife with laughter.

I watched the remake of 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' last night.
    Terrible.

Brad Renfro is in that right? If it's the same guy I am thinking of, I heard he did a good job.

  10. Stalingrad. Hadn't seen in quite some time, but still remains, imo, one of the 5-10 best war movies ever. Described the sheer hell that was the Eastern Front in World War II. If you haven't seen it and can deal with the subtitles, I highly recommend it.

The American Experience documentary "Stonewall Uprising," about the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village in 1969 and the gay rights movement. Fascinating stuff. Shocking to see footage of a 1967 CBS Reports "The Homosexual" (hosted by Mike Wallace) with quotes from a psychoanalyst at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine like "Homosexuality is in fact a mental illness which has reached epidemiological proportions." They also showed a scene from a 1950s Columbia University educational film showing some boys playing and a voiceover that said "Note how Albert delicately pats his hair, and adjusts his collar. His movements are not characteristic of a real boy."

And the worst - from a PSA called "Boys Beware": Sure enough, the following day, when Jimmy finished playing ball, well, the man was there waiting. Jimmy hadn't enjoyed himself so much in a long time. Then during lunch, Ralph showed him some pornographic pictures. Jimmy knew he shouldn't be interested but, well, he was curious. What Jimmy didn't know is that Ralph was sick. A sickness that was not visible like smallpox, but no less dangerous and contagious. A sickness of the mind. You see, Ralph was a homosexual. One never knows when the homosexual is about. He may appear normal, and it may be too late when you discover he is mentally ill.

"Alfie" - the '04 remake with Jude Law. Saw about 10 minutes on TV last weekend, and immediately turned it off so I could dig out my DVD of it and not miss the Sienna Miller nudity! :D

Actually, though the flick bombed at the box office and was absolutely panned by critics, I really enjoy it. Pull it out about once a year to watch.
