Super 8 Friday night. Classic Spielberg funhouse ride. Lots of ties to earlier movies, and he used 70s-80s film techniques, or at least that was the look of it. Loved the treat in the credits.

I've watched Apollo 13 twice this weekend. Love the line where Kranz says, "Well I suggest you invent a way to fit a square peg into a round hole. Rapidly."

    Midnight in Paris.

Woody telegraphs a good number of his tried-and-true punches here, but given his past decade-plus (Match Point was an utter recycle, and 'Barcelona' was wildly-overrated by Woodyphiles desperate for
one more genuine taste; You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger was utter excrement), we're grateful for anything -- and we get that. A double-handful of great ideas, well-executed, and perhaps eight great vintage Woody laughs, including a worthy bookend to "You know nothing of my work". An absolute must-see, for those who remember the glory days and aren't bitter about the lengthy recent sequence of bustouts, lost causes and pale self-copies.

Super 8, just loved it. We went to the new movie theater nearby that has these Dbox seats and we paid the extra to sit in them. They kind of rock you around to go with what's going on in the movie. Fun but I doubt I'd do it again. I just thought the movie was so cute with the kids and the writing is decent for that kind of flick.

Watched Resident Evil: Afterlife tonight and while it's not nearly as bad as the third one, I could not possibly care less about this franchise and only watch it when I want to see something as brain dead as the zombies it depicts.

J.J. Abrams wrote and directed, not Spielberg (he was the producer), but this was definitely reminiscent of Spielberg's early '80s popcorn flicks.

I really enjoyed it. The Goonies + E.T. + Cloverfield = Excellent summer fun.

The credits were awesome. As the movie ended, I thought to myself, I just want to see that one thing, but didn't think they were going to show it. Glad they did.

    It's almost certainly Top Ten.

Took the kids to see Kung Fu Panda 2. They loved it. I thought it was surprisingly good. Granted, I had low expectations.

I just wish the jerks who always have to rush out of the theater and NEVER watch the credits would have totally missed it. Instead, just as they had gotten up and started to walk out, they stood right in front of me as I was sitting to watch the credits, as I always do.

BTW, Elle Fanning was outstanding (as were all of the kids, really). Her first "scene" in Charlie's movie was really incredible. The boys' reactions to her were exactly what I imagine everyone else in the audience was feeling at that moment, like they were seeing a great actress being born. That was a great scene.

Dakota has always been outstanding (and I expect her to continue getting better and win an Oscar someday), but Elle is going to be right there with her.
