Finally saw Zombieland on Encore last night. Awesome. A little slow in the middle with the human interest stuff, but the zombie rules were great and I really liked how they turned into a little family by the end. I was kind of concerned they'd go the love triangle route.

I'm late to the game on "Kick-Ass." It was disappointing, especially after the first 30 minutes.

When Kick-Ass' first hero attempt failed, I was really excited about where the movie was headed. I was ready for a hero story rooted in reality. Even Hit Girl and Big Daddy's first scenes were cute and within the bounds of reason -- well, movie reason.

Then Hit Girl brutally slaughters a room full of people. There went the reality. Oh well, still an enjoyable piece of camp, I thought. Then she pointlessly murders two people. Now I'm lost. Two of the three "good guys" weren't worth rooting for, and the action grew tiresome by the end.

Saw the new Woody Allen, "Midnight in Paris." What a beautiful love letter to that city.

A candidate for the worse movie I've ever seen - "Just Go With It" with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Anniston and some uber-hot swimsuit model.

Not funny, not believable, not plausible, not funny, not entertaining, not funny, not interesting, not pleasant and not funny. It's 2 hours I can't have back.

I'm a huge fan of these movies, but I thought First Class was much better than any of them. You know what you're getting in the trilogy - the characters are already set. But to see these younger mutants (and fresh faces) develop was quite refreshing from the trilogy (and Wolverine).

'Adrift' - Brazilian movie, didn't like it. No real substance to it.
'All Good Things' - Too many holes.
'I Love You, Phillip Morris' - Liked it. Carey was a little big, but I liked it.

Caught a chunk of "Caveman" with Ringo Starr on one of the cable stations. It's a movie I loved when I was 12 or even 15, but never realized how much it really sucks. Even Barbara Bach and a young Shelly Long in fur britches couldn't redeem that crap-fest.

    MILD SPOILER WARNING

I did think it was the most accessible of the films, though every mutant character they used was straight from the comics. The odd thing about First Class is that they are taken from so many different eras in X-Men comic book history.

They drastically rewrote the histories of these characters from the books, much moreso than the other X-Men movies. The entire relationship between Mystique and Charles, for example, was new. Havoc is actually the younger brother of Cyclops in the books. Banshee was part of the second generation of the team, not the first, and he joined as an adult. Darwin and the girl with the wings are much more recent additions.

Shaw's character couldn't be more different from his comic-book counterpart, though I really liked what they did with him. My biggest plot-hole complaint about the story was about his first confrontation with Magneto. Why the hell did Magneto just stop?

I do see what you mean by the characters seeming to be fresher. Part of that was tossing so much of the comic-book history out the window. Another part was using more obscure characters like Darwin, Angel II, Azazel and Riptide.

Just watched 'Blue Valentine.' That was good.

I watched Journey To The Center Of The Earth -- the Brendan Fraser version -- with the kids. That might be one of the most boring "action" movies I've seen and it goes along with idiotic Fraser mugging throughout. Regrettable.

Two thoughts kept running through my mind while watching this last week.
I'll put the SPOILER ALERT back on for this

    1) Why the hell didn't we learn about the X-men's involvement in stopping the Cuban Missile Crisis when I was in school. Would have made it far more interesting.
    2) Xavier's accent drove me up the wall. Despite apparently growing up in New York, why was he obviously a Brit? This one I am actually serious about, my first observance obviously not so much. If anyone wants to fill me in on this, it would be much appreciated, I am from the camp that did not read comics when I was a kid.
