Re Ides of March . . . don't hold your breath for a domestic political procedural to EVER be named Best Picture.

I loved Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but I'd be stunned to see it get any Academy love in the acting, directing and best picture categories... I'm sure it will be nominated in the technical categories...

The acting category is an interesting one because Serkis (rightfully) got so much praise by critics for his performance. But, yeah, I don't think the Academy is ready to start giving love to actors for performances that are basically animated.

I'm sure we'll see someone win best actor Oscar for a role in a comedy well before we see someone win for a motion-capture performance. A nomination for Serkis would be a huge upset.

In truth, I actually only watch foreign independent films these days.

I kept yelling "OH SHIT" in the theater during Drive's violent scenes. Anyone ever read any James Sallis (author of Drive)?

I just saw Red State, the new Kevin Smith movie...

It's not bad. Very good acting. The only time you remember it's a Smith movie is the ending when one of the actors, who he's used in other films goes into a diatribe that sounds like the way Smith writes...

Given some of the reviews I'd read I was a little disappointed.

The Killer Elite. Always like both Jason Statham and Clive Owen. Neither disappointed. I enjoyed the movie, which in addition to being a fairly compelling story also was a fun 1980s period piece.

Glad to hear that. Previews looked good. Reviews were abysmal.
