One of my friends used to say he loved Kevin Smith films because "the dialogue is so real."

No. It's not. The only people who talk that way are people who constantly quote Kevin Smith films.

    "Animal Kingdom."

Hell of a movie. I've seen it described as the "Australian 'Goodfellas,'" and that's about right. Great pacing to build tension. I think the director and actor who played the lead did a tremendous job making us have sympathy with a protagonist who doesn't really talk very much. The ending is one of those that will stay with you for a long time.

As far as crime films go from 2010, this one is far superior to "The Town," which wasn't terrible.

Drive. What a wildly absurd piece of cinema. Not sure I liked it, but I loved it.

The soundtrack was so strange, and perfect.

    Conan O'Brien Can't Stop.

    I really wish I hadn't watched it.

Mizzou, our tastes in movies from what I can tell are similar, but I'll issue a disclaimer: I'm fairly easy to please where movies are concerned. And I'm a sucker for espionage and its tangent genres. So take my evaluation for what it's worth.

Watched The Tillman Story last night. What a shitty situation. I would love to meet his family, though. They seem to be a fascinating group.

I know what you mean, but you have to look at it differently. You're watching someone who is letting himself be filmed during the darkest point of his career and he's being real and honest. I think you have to really respect that.

I think it was true for Clerks. I don't think it's been true since. But since the dialogue is funny, he gets away with it.

I love Smith, but I agree with your assessment.

Oh, I do respect him. Completely. And I still think his show is hilarious, even as most others have faded on it.

But he's just such a miserable asshole off stage. The first scene, in his car, when the guy asks what he'd do if he ever stopped, and Conan had no answer? That just kept coming back. Like he's not a joking asshole ... he's an asshole. I don't know how he flips the switch, because he's the most naturally likable guy on camera. But Jesus...I hated him by the end of that movie.

50-50. We liked it, a lot. But holy shit, dude. I haven't cried that much since my dog died. Going to What's Your Number tomorrow.

One of many - the midnight phone call got me going, too, among others.
