Make sure you get to the part where Bogie and Bacall discuss their mutual evaluations in horseracing parlance. It was the last scene added to the picture, and in the opinion of some at Warner Brothers, made it much more marketable.

Public couldn't get enough of those two.

Thanks. When I find out-of-the-way, old book stores, I usually visit. I'll look for it.

My local library chain has multiple copies. Most major metro library chains, should.

It was Raymond Chandler's first novel.

Chandler remains my favorite mystery novelist, hands down. Christ, could he write.

My long-time first sig is a direct lift from the movie, and comes from Bogie and Bacall's first extended conversation in the picture.

Liut, there's an old Hollywood legend about The Big Sleep. I sure hope it's true, but it doesn't matter, it goes right to your point. Among the screenwriters brought in to adapt the novel was one William Faulkner. Faulkner could not figure out if the character who goes off the pier in a car killed himself or was murdered. Eventually, he asked Chandler.
Chandler's response was "Damned if I know."

I don't read that much fiction anymore but I am a huge Chandler fan. The Big Sleep is a great work, but The Long Goodbye is probably my favorite. The Little Sister rounds out the top three.

You are absolutely right about Spider-Man and Iron Man. That has always bugged me about the Spider-Man movies in particular. We saw him in costume without the mask way too much.

That said, I have no problem with it at all in Captain America. Steve Rodgers' identity was never really supposed to be much of a secret, at least not in the movie.

I saw it this afternoon. I liked it. The super jumps were a bit much, but otherwise, it was actually a little better than I expected.

That said, I've always thought the whole Peggy Carter/Sharon Carter thing was a little creepy. I hope they don't dig into it that much in any sequels or in The Avengers.

Just watched Unknown, on the tip on this thread that January Jones was hot. I'll say this: She plays bitch really well. To me Diane Kruger was hotter. The movie overall was a Bourne ripoff.

I think the only reason it bugged me in Captain America was that it had previously bugged me with Spider Man and because there was just no logical reason for him to remove the helmet. It wasn't a big deal, but it's just a trend I've noticed in the comic book movies where the super hero wears a mask.

Diane Kruger is gorgeous. She's never looked better than she did playing Helen of Troy. Unknown was definitely a Bourne ripoff. It wasn't a bad movie, but I came out of it calling it Bourne Light. I also thought I knew where it was going at one point and turned out to be wrong, but I'm convinced my ending was better. 8) Unfortunately, I don't really remember what I had in mind, so I can't write my own script. :)

I understand your point about the mask thing. Many times there wasn't a good reason for it in either movie. The bit about the spark catching Spider-Man's mask on the train in Spider-Man II was a heck of a reach just so they could have an excuse to show his facial expressions during the scene. I hated that about the Spider-Man movies, too.

I'm just saying Captain America is a very different character and having him remove the mask/helmet isn't nearly as big of a deal as it was for Spider-Man.

Speaking of the library, got Guns of Navarone for the kids this weekend. Still fairly entertaining.

Also saw "Bridesmaids"; now that was pretty darn funny. It was the female Hangover. That Byrne lady from Damages (Amanda?) was excellent. I admit, I'm a hair guy and she had great hair.
