If you go to a non-matinee for an anticipated movie these days, you might as well be planning for Chuck E. Cheese.

I would simply and boldly ask for my refund, if it is way out of hand.

Yes, yes, yes. One of my favorites of 2011. No doubt.

Took my kid to see Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, yesterday. It actually wasn't as horrible as I thought it would be, at least, when they weren't singing. It wasn't good, but my kid liked it, which I liked, and I got to watch the great David Cross spend the movie dressed as a pelican, which made me laugh several times.

Ugh. It lived down to my expectations. The whole time I was watching, I just felt sorry for Cross and Jason Lee. But I guess it did what it was supposed to do. It kept my 8-year-old and her friend entertained for an hour and a half.

The best part was the two of them ranking their favorite scenes on the way home. Her friend would bring up something as her second-favorite and my daughter would say it was her fourth-favorite.

Then they asked me my favorite part. "When it ended"

I'm watching "Obsessed" right now. Mmmmmmmmm Idris Elba.

(Ali Larter and Beyonce for the boys. Lifetime.)

Went to see Mission: Impossible in IMAX yesterday. I was more impressed with IMAX than I was the movie. It had the requisite action sequences, which mostly felt like they were recycling stuff from earlier in the series. That's not surprising, I guess, but I came away underwhelmed.

    "Brick."

Pretty fun stab at modern noir. Not sure if setting a hard-boiled detective story in a contemporary high school is an interesting take on the genre or just a gimmick that covers up a formulaic, derivative plot. Sometimes it felt a little like a film school final exam. The director, Rian Johnson, has been on "Filmspotting" on NPR in the past and seems like a genuinely good, really down-to-earth guy who just loves film.

It's worth watching, if nothing else than to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt in an early role.
