"Rise of the Planet of the Apes."

Mostly excellent. Hope it wins a couple of Academy Awards, mostly likely in special effects and, possibly, I've heard, in Best Supporting Actor for the guy who played Caesar's face.

    Two gripes:

    (1) What was the point of the Dr. Rodman love interest? She's an utterly worthless character. Certainly a lot ended up on the cutting-room floor, no?

    (2) Not really a gripe, but I felt like I was fortunate to know a little bit about how genetic therapy works (via a virus). I wonder how many people the science kind of lost, if they haven't been introduced to vaccines and genetics.

Contraband. Enjoyed it, just because I like Wahlberg. Thought it would be great. It was not. Stretches that seemed too long to me without action. Certain things stretched believability but I'm not an expert in smuggling.

Seeing Mission Impossible tomorrow night. Lots of good previews tonight, seems like it will be a good spring for movies.

Small Town Gay Bar. I'm back on my documentary kick, and this focused on two Mississippi towns with a gay bar, and I guess I never realized how truly lucky I am to have lived where I have. Lexington is very welcoming to the gay community, Richmond had a gay bar like two blocks from where I lived, Connecticut allowed gay marriage and, well, Atlanta is Atlanta. I've never lived anywhere where the gay people in town honestly had nowhere to go and no place to feel comfortable.

Also, side note: Small-town Mississippi drag queens are NOT GOOD.

Did you know it was a remake? I didn't realize that until I read a review today. Remake of a foreign movie. I like Wahlberg, too. I thought his performance in "The Fighter" was highly underrated. Better than Bale's in some ways because sometimes it's harder to be understated.

Oh, and Fuck You, Netflix. On my "suggested" list in documentaries, second is Never Say Never: Justin Bieber.

I mean, I guess I did just watch a documentary on gay people, so maybe that's triggering it ...

Just saw Contraband tonight as well, solid flick. I enjoyed it. Just enough action to sustain me. Was hoping they'd blow more shit up.

Walberg does what he does well. He just doesn't have a lot of range. His characters always have the same sort of demeanor. Nothing wrong with that.

Did not realize it was a remake either, looked like it was originally a book by some Icelandic author, looking quickly at the name is it flashed up on the screen, so I thought there might be that chance.

Yeah, that really did need the tasteful blue font. Sorry.
