I think that disconnect is because Academy members nominate the movies they've seen so popularity factors in. Same thing happened to "The Wire" at Emmy time.

"2001: A Space Odyssey" ... for about the 15th time.

This viewing was my favorite, though, because I actually got my kids (ages 13 and 10-1/2) to watch it with me. And to my great surprise, they not only stuck with it, we actually had a nice discussion about the ending.

Mrs. Coco still despises the movie, though, and was grumpy the kids and I "wasted" a snowy/icy Saturday night watching it.

To which I replied, "I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over." :)

Mrs. Coco and I see eye to eye on this one.

"Green Lantern." It was definitely a notch below the Marvel superhero movies, but I enjoyed it.

Of course, seeing it directly after "The Green Hornet," it looked damn-near Oscar-worthy.

Has anybody seen Margin Call? Oscar worthy or no?

Met a guy who works for Variety who agrees The Artist is preordained Best Picture winner. I asked if the momentum could change as it so often does these days. He said not a chance.

I just saw 'Margin Call' over the weekend and it wasn't very good, let alone Oscar-worthy.

Easiest path to an Oscar nod: Make a film that celebrates art.

There is a reason "Chicago" won Best Picture.

There is a reason "Shakespeare in Love" won Best Picture over "Saving Private Ryan."

There is a reason that "The Artist," "Hugo," and "Midnight in Paris" will be nominated this year.

I saw "Margin Call" and I loved it. I think it's the best of the drag Wall Street over the coals movies that have come out. But I doubt it makes the field. Jeremy Irons and Stanley Tucci could get nods for actor though.

I watched "Warrior" tonight and what a surprisingly good movie it turned out to be. It wasn't some cheesy fight movie trying to exploit the rise in MMA's popularity.

The characters were well drawn and well acted. I couldn't believe that was the same Tom Hardy from "Inception." He pulled off the role of a sullen bruiser exquisitely, and the guy who played Brendan was believable as both a physics teacher and grappler. Nolte was perfect as the recovering alcoholic father and one scene in particular between him and Hardy was outstanding.

    Really well done.

Despite a really good cast, I thought "Margin Call" was one of the more boring movies I've seen in years.

Seems like people either loved it or hated it.

It did just pick up an Oscar nom for screenplay.

Sorry about Margin Call and Ides of March. Not much love. Cheering for The Descendants now.
