I can understand someone not agreeing that 'True Grit' is great. It's a remake, which some might say disqualifies it.
It's definitely superior to 'The Social Network,' but my intent was really just to show that as recently as two years ago we had a pretty strong year for movies - mainstream releases. I was trying to illustrate my point that when people start throwing superlatives around it's because they haven't taken the time to gain perspective.

I think 2011 was a weak year for mainstream movies, and I think 2012 has been a weak year for mainstream releases.

Good movie this year that not many people have seen - 'Ruby Sparks.' Warning, it has a bad, sappy ending tacked on.
'Safety Not Guaranteed' is also pretty good, but I don't think it's been as good as it's reviews. It also suffers from the wrong ending.

I agree that 2011 was fairly weak, but I think 2012 will end up being considered a strong year when all is said and done.

Movies that botched the ending would be a great discussion on its own.

"Source Code," from last year, is a huge one.

2011 was a tremendous year, however, for independent movies.

    "Take Shelter"
    "Melancholia"
    "Martha Marcy May Marlene"
    "Drive"
    "Win, Win"
    "The Skin I Live In"
    "Margaret"

That's quite a provocative list right there.

Could be. There have been some movies I haven't seen yet.
So far, I haven't thought too highly of the 'good' mainstream movies.
    Always some interesting small movies.

When looking at a year in movies, I don't break them into mainstream and independent/small movies. I consider those ones you listed, Dick, in 2011 and still think it's fairly weak.

You and I have discussed it several times, but I really despise 'Melancholia.'
'Win, Win,' was alright. It wasn't bad, but I didn't think as highly of it as a lot of other people did.
I liked 'Drive,' but again didn't love it the way some others do. I also think it's on the fence between mainstream and small.
I liked 'Martha Marcy May Marlene.'
I loved 'The Skin I Live In.'

'Take Shelter' and 'Margaret' are still pending for me.

I feel like I remember a lot of people here hating it.

I think it's the best movie of the decade, to this point.

    Better than Inception, Dick?

    I kid, I kid.

Wow, I realize we're only two or three years into the decade, depending how you count it, but that's insane to me.

If I'm making a personal assessment, I don't really care if it's a small movie or a mainstream release.
For discussion purposes, I try to distinguish because a lot of people do not watch small movies or foreign movies.
