I think enough people do on this site to make it worthwhile to include them in discussions like this.

'Blue Valentine' is great. I don't think it's as generally appreciated as it should be because it's such a raw, painful movie.

Check out 2005. Talk about a great year to go to the movies.

    'The Constant Gardner'
    'Match Point'
    'Cache'
    'Munich'
    'Brokeback Mountain'
    'A History of Violence'
    'Oldboy'
    'The New World'
    'The Squid and the Whale'
    'Turtles Can Fly'
    'Broken Flowers'
    'Grizzly Man'
    'Crash'
    'Syriana'
    'Murderball'
    'Junebug'
'Me and You and Everyone We Know'
    'Cinderella Man'
    'Good Night, and good Luck'
    'Hustle and Flow'
    'Sin City'
    'Shopgirl'

There are some on the list that weren't as good as their reviews. 'Sin City' and 'The New World' were really interesting efforts, although I think they ultimately don't work.

'The Constant Gardner' was my favorite that year.

    But that's a good year.

I really wanted to love the Constant Gardener, but it just didn't really move me. It's been a while since I watched it, but it would be well down my list of favorites from 2005.

I know a lot of people who liked it but didn't love.
'Syriana,' 'Crash' and 'Good Night, and Good Luck' are the ones I didn't flip over the way a lot of other people did. All good movies, but I know a lot of people who really loved them.

I really wanted to love 'You and Me and Everyone We Know.' I still want to love it, but I don't. Still a good movie, though.

Loved Sin City, would go to war for it, and thought it the best picture of that year.

Loved GN&GL, too, but it wasn's all that ambitious, and wasn't breaking any new ground. Just a sucker for that kind of thing.

'05's a powderkeg, because so many movies on that list were/are either critics' darlings, and/or adored by niches. I don't want to offend anyone here, which is why I will not specifically refer to said pictures, except to say there are no less than six of 'em on that list. I saw more than half the movies on that list, and loved TWO of them.

    You remember correctly.

I'm not going back into the barrel about that thing, but I'm proud I was able to talk a lot of people out of seeing it.

My God smiles on me. Yes, Lord, I did good.

I only put movies I saw on the list, and I included some that I didn't particularly like but were critical successes.
I included some - 'The New World' and 'Sin City' - that I think really didn't work but I really dig the effort.

I'm not trying to be combative, other than about Dick's disturbing affinity for that awful Von Trier movie.

Probably seeing an early movie tomorrow morning. Not sure which.

    The Collection
    Killing Them Softly
    Silver Linings
    Flight
    Lincoln
    Taken 2

    Which one should I see?
