Saw "Haywire" finally and really liked it.

Interesting when a really good director tackles genre material.

Soderberg surrounds an absolute beginner with an A-list cast, emphasizes her strengths and minimizes the need for her to do much acting. And, you know, it works.

    Haywire made this list:

...which I discounted b/c Killing Them Softly did too, and it's the worst movie I've seen this year.

    See more bad movies.

I get your critique of Killing Them Softly, though. It's reasonable. It's such a peculiar creature. If Jim Jarmusch had made it, wouldn't have surprised me.

It'll get nommed for Best Picture and Best director, a few other things.

Zero Dark Thirty and Silver Linings Playbook are your two horses to win the big prizes.

    Falling Down.
I'm a little late to that party.

  6. Lincoln is right there, too. Many think Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty are the top contenders for Oscar. I wish Argo would be in that conversation.

Lewis is nearly a lock for Best Actor. I think Alan Arkin gets Best Supporting for Argo maybe.

Ted - What a mess. It tries to be a live action Family Guy, but it's nowhere near as funny as the TV show.

Lincoln was outstanding, but Argo definitely did not let down. Skyfall was the best Bond movie I think I have seen, mind you I'm not a big Bond guy, but it was better than Casino Royale (no poorly executed, predictable and all too unrealistic poker scene).

My favourote movies that I've seen this year in order:

    1) Avengers -- The most enjoyable movie I watched all year. Loved every second of it. Best picture of the year worthy for the Academy? hell no, but it is damn fun and had great special effects.
    2) Lincoln -- This is one where I actually did not hear much about before seeing it. I remember hearing something about it a couple of months prior, but then nothing until the day I saw it and picked it on a whim. Liked it right away, but the longer it marinates, the better I like it.
    3) Argo -- Solid movie from start to finish. Afleck's best effort in a long time. Met the hype and I didn't think it would.
    4) Skyfall -- As I said above, best Bond movie I've seen. Just a great flick.
    5) Hobbit -- Maybe suffering from my high expectations, but still fifth on my list I think is pretty good. Just dragged a bit too much early, but it is a foundation movie, so I think that is excusable. The last hour or so may be one of the best hours I've spent at the theatre all year.

Honourable mention: Hunger Games, Bourne Legacy, Prometheus, The Watch, Seven Psycopaths

    Biggest surprise: Argo
Biggest disappointment: Dark Knight but Spiderman wasn't far off, only it didn't have as far to fall as Dark Knight.

Movie I am most looking forward to now -- Oz the Great and powerful

No I did not, I'm guessing I should?

Not a big fan of horror.

    "Magic Mike"

Really entertaining, but it could have been even better. I'd compare it to "Entourage," the television show: Great when it focused on the business and "inside baseball" story arcs. Not so great when it strayed into the romantic subplots. Ultimately, the movie just tried too hard to be too much to too many people, and that diluted it. Still worth a rental, though, as it is quite entertaining.
