Deer Hunter was on TCM the other evening.

Still well-acted, but overrated. The entire Vietnam sequence depends way too much on a "What are the f$%#in' ODDS?!?!!?" situation.

And the scene when De Niro takes Savage out of the hospital is hilariously acted by Savage.

"No, Mike! NO!!!! NOOOO!! OK . . . you do as your heart tells ya."

    The Bucket List
It was on TV. It's just too depressing. I'm too young to think about my mortality in a serious way.

    The Shining
Such a great, creepy movie with such a slow burn to a balls out insane finale. I know it's vastly different from the novel, which I love along with the more faithful mini-series, but Kubrick's film is the proverbial symphony of horror. Amazing atmosphere and some of the shots are masterfully crafted, even if they are overlooked (pun intended) for the often-featured "Here's Johnny!" shot. Jack is a force of nature in this movie.

Side Effects - I didn't pay enough attention to reviews and thought it was going to be about side effects. It's really a who's fooling who movie. I laughed a couple of times when I don't think I was supposed to find anything funny. I was bored for about the first half but then it got interesting.

A Late Quartet - Christopher Walken, Catherine Keener, Philip Seymour Hoffman. Enjoyed it.

We talked about seeing 'Side Effects.'
My argument against it: Nothing with Channing Tatum in it is worth seeing at the theater. Let's wait for DirecTv.

21 Jump Street was surprisingly good, but maybe my expectations were just low going in to seeing it.

At the risk of treading on spoiler territory, I'll just say Chan's not in it very much...it was widely reported he spent less than 2 weeks working on the film, including rehearsals.

Side Effects - I liked Rooney Mara in Dragon Tat, but this was not the correct vehicle for her to advance her career. Just a blah performance all around. Channing Tatum was not an essential part of the story. Seems like they wasted money by using him. Any schlub would have worked in that limited role. And what the hell was up with using a body double for Rooney's nude scene? She showed everything more in Fincher's film. Now all of the sudden she's shy?

"Chan," huh? I take it you have some familiarity with this gentleman?

He seems pleasant. In a groin area way.

And I haven't seen the film, but the three reviews I read gave away the Chan thing, so I don't think it's too much of a spoiler to mention his scenes do not encompass a large part of the movie.

Or maybe Buck just believes that anything Chan is involved with has a good possibility of sucking, which is a fair point.

I have not seen "Magic Mike," however. I get incredibly mixed reviews from my friends on that one.

"Safety Not Guaranteed." Played it a little too safe, seems to me.

The Damned United will be on my DVR by the time I get home. Can't wait.

    "The Avengers."

I have to stop watching shit like this. I watch it because I don't want to be the asshole who declares he doesn't like something without trying it first. And every time it's the same. Cool concept hitched to a by-the-numbers plot with no stakes that I can possibly give a shit about, and to which paying attention is a two-hour chore.

So, you're the asshole who can't turn his brain off and just have fun for a couple of hours. :)
