We just saw it for the first time this weekend.

Chastain was fabulous; the scene where she lays into the Pakistan station chief (Kyle Chandler, with the conference room door open) was spot on, should have won her the Oscar right there.

Riveting, well done, by the time they get to the house, felt it was already over (how about the fictional Seal Team 6, just before landing someone asks "who's been in a helo crash?" and the all raise their hands.)

The guy who was the son was absolutely terrible and the wife was very inconistent in her performance.

Just saw the FX'd version of Machete. Saw it as it should be (i.e, cursing, no skips/shortened scenes) when it first came out. Typical exploitation film with schlock, predictably goofy cuts (minus the typical syndicated movie on TV cuts) and the like. My question: has anyone ever tried the "cook an egg on the floor" trick, whether it's to heal something or just to try cooking it?

The parade of Oscar nominees continued tonight with "Life of Pi."

I'd been told the movie was three hours, and it sure felt that way (even though in reality it's only two). I'm still trying to figure out how the tiger CGI seemed so amazingly accurate, but just about everything else was unbelievable -- and not in a good way.

I'm intrigued to read the novel on which the film was based.

    "Fat Kid Rules the World"

A teen movie that actually has heart. I was pleasantly surprised by the (relative) emotional resonance.

    Um. No.
    Because it's fake voodoo shit.
Although, I have seen someone try to cook cookies on the dash of their car when it was 100 degrees in the shade.

Among Mexicans it's traditionally way to deal with the evil eye.
It can be used as a means to tell if you are under the influence of the evil or as a means to remove that influence.

    Over the weekend:

Saw 42 as discussed on the other thread.

Watched Alex Cross. Fairly kick-ass movie. Stands by itself if you aren't familiar with the others in the series.

Just because I needed a laugh, I cued up the first part of A League of Their Own. Wanted to hear all of Lovitz' lines. Favorite: "You know what? If I had your job, I'd KILL myself. Wait right here while I go rustle up a pistol!"

At the behest of Mrs. Novelist, watched the final two installments of the Twilight series. Not really my cup of tea, but she seemed happy that I watched them with her, so there's that.

Watched Trouble with the Curve. I'm glad there is still a place in the cinematic world for a gentle film about people. Fathers and daughters, colleagues...mostly what stuck with me is that the movie is about loyalty. Not blind loyalty, but the eyes wide open kind.

If I'm not mistaken, Quantum of Solace suffered terribly because of the writer's strike.
