Cache (also known as "Hidden"): French couple starts getting long videotapes of the outside of their house from someone who's motives are not entirely clear. More effective than the inevitable American remake will be.

Django Unchained: Didn't quite live up to the hype and a letdown from Basterds

This is 40: pretty funny, great cast

The Place Beyond the Pines - Not terrible, but not great. If it's raining and you are at the movie theater and it's the movie that's about to start, might as well see it. Ryan Gosling was good.

Birdy - Won the Grand Prix award at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival. I thought it was a lovely movie when I saw it years ago. Liked it again when I watched it last night. Stars Nicolas Cage and Matthew Modine.

Gosh, I haven't seen that in ages. I recall it pretty fondly.

When isn't Gosling good? Almost saw that last night, but went with Silver Linings Playbook, instead. Thoroughly enjoyed it; very good performances from everybody involved. I found Jennifer Lawrence pretty mesmerizing, but I actually thought Bradley Cooper was excellent. I don't generally care for him all that much -- I think he's kind of skeevy -- but he stole the show.

  6. Saw Oblivion, thought it was pretty convoluted. Seemed like it was trying to be a more sophisticated Independence Day or something.

Yeah, I wasn't impressed. The whole first half of the movie is really, really slow... I actually liked Jack Reacher better.

Django Unchained. Excellent. Not on the Pulp Fiction level, but it was very good. I laughed way more than I thought I would. The scene with the white hoods and eye holes was hilarious.

    Also known as "Lost Highway."

Anyway: "Django Unchained." It was a wildly fun ride off of a brilliantly simple concept: Place an old-fashioned Western in the antebellum South. Fair warning: The violence is absolutely over the top. Maybe worse than "Drive." I had to turn my head a few times, I'm embarrassed to say. Though Tarantino had that covered, as well, as I should have also covered my ears.

The Drive comparison is an interesting one... I remember being pretty stunned at how graphic the violence in Drive was, maybe because I wasn't expecting it in the way you do with a Tarantino film.

Would you agree that "Django" is his most graphically violent film? I know "Kill Bill" had a higher body count, but it was more cartoonish. The ear scene in "Reservoir Dogs" is child's play compared to "Django."

Again, though: Wildly fun ride. I love how he uses music.

Which is funny, because it showed the least.

I think that I've just never seen gun play be that gory before. And, like I said, the sound effects made it worse.
