I've always liked Galifianakis, back to the days when he used to come on Carolla's radio show, but he seems to openly acknowledge that he'll keep making Hangover sequels in order to get paid. While I don't blame him, it does seem a bit off-putting that he doesn't seem to care about making quality movies.

People are dumb enough to go see them. Might as well make them and get paid.

Saw The Great Gatsby over the weekend. Really liked it. Not a big Leo fan but though he did a great job.

Movie looked great with some cinematic nods to the the book -- such as the scene with the billowing white drapes.

I actually liked The Campaign. As a political junkie it was funny remembering where a particular "joke" came from.

I loved the book, I was sorely disappointed when I heard McConaughey was playing Mickey Haller, but he did a very good job.

Ryan Phillippe nailed his role also.

Interesting that Bryan Cranston had a small role in the film, he is one of the popular choices to play Harry Bosch on the various websites that discuss such things.

In theater: "Mud" with Matthew McC and a little screen time for Reece Witherspoon. But the two child leads were very authentic and the setting was its own character. Not to "Winter's Bone" heights but a genuine slice of Arkansas-along-the-Mississippi life.

Oh, and our boy Michael Shannon appears!

Also caught part of one of my favorite (and too underrated) films of the past decade: 50/50. It successfully traverses its tonal shifts without crossing to the overwrought.

What did you not like about It's Kind of a Funny Story? I mean, it has the same cookie-cutter teenage angst plot guiding it, and Emma Roberts has played the same character for the past 5 years except for a handful of movies. Hmm ... maybe it's not as interesting as I thought originally.

Just got back home from Star Trek. I don't want to spoil anything, but I was apparently the only one in the theater who'd seen the original Star Trek trilogy of 2, 3 and 4. I loved the references, even if a bit melodramatic.

Saw Chaplin's "The Kid" last night and it occurred to me that if another Chaplin biopic is done -- perhaps it shouldn't be, but still -- they should cast Hugh Grant as Chaplin.

By now we're all spoiled with what can be done with movies, but this held up pretty well.

  10. Question on Mud: I saw it and I really liked it all the way up until the end. Did you feel like the ending was a bit preposterous within the context of the movie?

Since you're seeing it a bit after the fact, I imagine some of the diehards might have already seen it, you know :D

That's the thing: "Superman Returns" was in no way a reboot. New actors, sure, but it was a follow-up to a 35-year-old film. "Man of Steel" is exciting in that it's doing something new and not being slavish to the Donner flick. Yeah, I grew up with that movie, but I'm not going to be close-minded about moving away from it.
