Rewatched Cast Away last night. I know there are those who take issue with certain things about it, but I still think it's incredibly well done.

    I like 'Cast Away.'
I hate the whale but like the movie.

    Argo...

Liked it more before I read up on the real event, then I was disappointed how many liberties they took with what happened.

Saw the new Star Trek today. It was very enjoyable.

Also saw The Bling Ring. Total piece of shit.

I admire the decision to avoid a classical happy ending.

The crash sequence, from the time the lavatory door blows out (spoilers!) is remarkably well done.

Pitch Perfect. Interesting to me that they all did their own singing, for the most part. Solid singing voices from several people you wouldn't expect.

Sandler makes movies about malcontent schlubs who successfully use their rage to battle true malevolence, all while mysteriously scoring gorgeous women. It's pure fantasy.

The movies in the Sandler canon that are not -- Funny People (he's a dick), Punch-Drunk Love(he's repressed), Reign Over Me(he's grief-sticken), and to some extent Spanglish(he's not full of rage) -- were the ones no one really wanted to see.

    Sandler is like Olive Garden.

No one will bitch about seeing it, but no one is walking out of the theater blow away by what they just saw or will tell their friends to go see it.

    That's a pretty good comparison.

Not sure about Alma's idea, simply because there are plenty of cases where the angry malcontent part doesn't fit, such as 50 First Dates and Mr. Deeds.

    "Monsters University"

It's pretty much a remake of "Revenge of the Nerds," maybe a little bit of "Rudy" stirred in thematically, with familiar Pixar characters in the roles. I enjoyed it, particularly the send-up of college life. The kids didn't really get that, of course, but they certainly enjoyed all of the competition and running around and hijinks. Nice lesson wrapped up into it about perseverence and how there is more than one route to one's goals.

I also caught "Monsters U," but never saw "Revenge of the Nerds" so I wouldn't know that comparison. I didn't see much "Rudy" in it myself, though.

But I enjoyed it thoroughly. To me the lesson wasn't about perseverance as it was learning to work as a team, which seems to be a common theme of Pixar movies.

The "Blue Umbrella" short prior to it was pretty cool, too. It'd been awhile since I'd seen a Pixar movie at a theater and forgot about those.

None of the coming attractions remotely interested me.

Oh, yeah, the teamwork thing, too. For sure. Most "Pixar" movies seem to be buddy movies, so that's almost a given, though taken to another level here.

Also quite a bit about how people have different skills and they can all be valuable. Mike ended up being a poor scarer, for example, but an excellent coach.
