The original Solaris, which was worth watching (and watching and watching - it's long) if only for this line: "Don't turn a scientific problem into a common love story."

    Saving Mr. Banks

It was the wife's birthday, so her pick. Not bad, but not something I would have picked. No idea Collin Farrell was in this movie. Never advertised in the trailers. Goes to show that he's considered box office poison now. Hanks was as close to Walt Disney as he could get, but he played him about a decade too young. From what I've watched and read, Uncle Walt was in much worse shape in the early 1960s than portrayed in this movie. I can't remember watching "Mary Poppins." I'm sure that I probably saw it at some point in my childhood, but it's just not the kind of movie I'd be into, even as a kid.

Watched Friends With Benefits the other night and it was formulaic but enjoyable. Mila Kunis spends about half her screen time in her underwear, so that was a bonus.

    The Place Beyond the Pines.

A very well made, and well acted movie. One of the more unique dramas I've seen in years, because it basically tells 3 different stories and you don't see any of them coming.

I liked this movie a lot more than I expected.

I saw "Her" last weekend. I don't get the love for this movie. I found it silly, hated the ending and found Phoenix's character was too dweeby and annoying to care about. Maybe my expectations were too high based on the uniformly wonderful reviews.

Lone Survivor yesterday. Gut-wrenching overall, but I had a couple of quibbles concerning local fauna. I heard a blue jay shriek during one quiet moment, and then there was the shot of a rattlesnake. Do they have those in Afghanistan? Didn't really take away from the story; it was just something that caught my attention.

In any case, the overall picture this cast of the risky nature of the warrior's life seems spot on.

Side note: Dude sitting in front of me had two boys with him. I'd guess their ages at 8 and 10. Not sure what he was thinking ...

The movie was shot pretty much right outside my door.

Here in Albuquerque, NM. In the Monzano Mountains, adjacent to Kirtland AFB.

Such a great cast. Best 2013 movie I've seen so far. The end credits fucked me up...

I, too, don't understand the love for Her. Despite its "dystopian light" ambition, it was really just a crappy romantic comedy with less-than-compelling characters. The dialogue was painfully sappy.

Plus, who can be taken seriously wearing pants so far above the belly button? Certainly not Joaquin Phoenix when he's already trying to overcome a distractingly cheesy mustache and horn-rim glasses.

I have no idea what "dystopian light ambition" is, but that was one of the worst mustaches ever.

I will side with JRoyal on this one and say I really enjoyed Her; it's probably in my top 3 movies for 2013.
