Last movie you watched......

  1. End of Watch.
Finally broke down to watch to watch it - Netflix has shitty selection of on-line movies, but anyway. ...

    I really liked it.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña had a GREAT chemistry that made the movie for me.
Anna Kendrick's cleavage didn't hurt! I like to think her breasts are really nice and not just thanks to push-up bras.

    Spoiler ...

I thought the wrong cop died at the end.

Just watched it tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. It really was gripping even though we already knew how it was going to end.

Hanks and Barkhad Abdi were both fantastic. I haven't seen enough of the other films to say Hanks was snubbed, but he did a damn fine job and his performance would have won him an Oscar in a lot of years.

The movie did make me curious to go back and read some of the accounts of the true events to see where they may have taken liberties.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and, yeah, it was as dumb as I expected, but at least it didn't try to be anything but a stupid comedy. That kind of makes it endearing as an entertaining movie to watch.

The Spectacular Now - Good performances all around but a real heartbreaker. Nice to see a teen movie take on alcoholism in a serious way.

    Yeah...

Supposedly Phillips was way too close to the coast and the movie pointed that out as his boat was away from the pack. My wife pointed out his less than solid behavior when I told her I got the Blu Ray from the Redbox. He wanted to get there quicker to either make more money or something like that. We all have bosses.

I think he is being sued by the crew for the profits he made off of this encounter.

Been on a documentary kick lately, and caught two excellent ones on Netflix:

The Thin Blue Line: Errol Morris classic about the wrongful conviction of a man for killing a cop in Dallas in 1976. Just amazing how hard the wheels of justice are to stop once they start turning in the wrong direction.

Bully: Follows the stories of five middle school kids who are bullied by their peers. Amazing they were able to capture some of this stuff on film. Made me not want to have kids, honestly.

Saw "Captain Phillips" this weekend and just went back and read this. Wow. I loved that scene. I remember thinking about halfway through the movie, "This is a really good movie, but is it a best picture-caliber movie?" Then the last 30 minutes and especially this scene sold it for me. Loved this film.

So far, I've seen "Captain Phillips," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Her," and "The Wolf of Wall Street." Of those, I'd rank them like this:

    1) Dallas Buyers Club
    2) Captain Phillips (and this is close)
    3) Her
    4) The Wolf of Wall Street

And Hanks definitely deserved a nomination over DiCaprio. I still need to see the other movies, but while I thought "The Wolf of Wall Street" was good, it came across too much as a retread "Goodfellas" on Wall Street, and DiCaprio was just mimicking Ray Liotta in a lot of it (though the scene where he got screwed up by the expired ludes was pretty good stuff).

Watched Prisoners on blueray over the weekend with Mrs. Novelist. Not a new concept -- how far would you go to get your kid back in an abduction situation -- but I found it riveting.

  9. I want to see Bully, but - having kids, and having been a bit of mean jackass myself (not a big kid, just mouthy with a sharp tongue) - I can't bring myself to watch it.

  10. This was the last movie I saw as well, and is my opinion as well, minus the not seeing American Hustle part. Seen it — I liked it, but didn't love it.

No time for movies. Since Dec. 29 I've watched six seasons of Doctor Who, the lone season of Broadchurch and three "seasons" of Sherlock.

My DVR has been all but abandoned.

But I'm keeping up with this thread so I know what to catch up on. :D

  12. Where did you watch the Third season of Sherlock? Network TV?
