I watched it at home, but I have a pretty great TV for this sort of thing.

However, Avatar proved that stunning visuals just aren't enough for me, at least if I'm going to classify the movie as one of the best of the year.

That should be a pretty high bar, and Gravity didn't even come close to reaching it.

    Bad Words...

Loved every second of it. Funniest movie I've seen in years.

Extract. Meh. Was bored and surfing Netflix. Not the worst movie I've ever seen, but not great.

A Royal Affair. I've been on a bit of a Mads Mikkelsen kick lately, also watching The Hunt. I thought both were really well done.

Netflix seems to have really beefed up their international and documentary selections, which is great. Most of those types of movies from the past few years that I've wanted to catch up on are on there.

I saw that on HBO (or one of the movie channels) last fall. I agree with you. I was cheering by the end when the rogue planet sucked up Dunst and her whiny sister. If I was Sutherland, I would have offed myself long before the end was near.

On the other hand, I saw "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," with Steve Carrell and Keira Knightely a few weeks ago on HBO, and thoroughly enjoyed that one.

Saw an advanced screening of Million Dollar Arm tonight. It was a little Jerry Maguire, but more like Slumdog Millionaire meets Trouble With The Curve. I loved every minute of it. Definitely worth seeing. And now, everything I needed to learn about being a baseball scout, I learned from Clint Eastwood and Alan Arkin.
It also has Rey Maualuga as a fictional Rams player who is kind of a prick. (OK, not kind of.)

Last Vegas - again. Saw it on the big screen in January and just bought the blu-ray. Great, funny movie. Makes me want to go back to Vegas.

    Agree.

Also, I could swap out "Wolf of Wall Street" with "Gravity" in the post above...both were overrated.

Finally got around to watching Magic Mike -- at the wife's request -- and it was OK. I've seen more of Matthew McConaughey than I've ever hoped to, so I've got that going for me.

I understood the hype about it from an eye-candy-for-ladies standpoint (a lot of my female Facebook friends treated seeing it like a life-changing experience), but there were many straight male film critics who insisted it was one of the best films of the year. I didn't get that.

It was supposed to be an underdog story, but everyone involved was kind of a dick, so there really wasn't anyone to root for.

"Trance" was on HBO last night. Interesting little caper film from Danny Boyle. I'll give anything with Vincent Cassel a look, and seeing Rosario Dawson nekkid was a nice bonus.

I really enjoyed Wolf of Wall Street, but I sure didn't think it was Best Picture nomination worthy. It was fun and raucous, but it wasn't a "great" movie.
