Short Term 12 - watched it based on a friend's recommendation. It's about the workers and kids at a home for at-risk teens. It was one of the best, most powerful, and intense movies I've seen in a while. I recommend checking it out on Netflix streaming.

August: Osage County and Anchorman 2 today. AOC had some great acting, and I loved seeing my home state represented, even if it's not the kindest of stories (FYI, incest is not common in Oklahoma by my experience; thanks, Tracy Letts, for that wonderful reflection on your home state). Anchorman 2 wasn't as funny as the first but had some great moments.

In my opinion, Dallas Buyers Club was anything but disappointing and was the best movie of 2013. And I really, really liked 12 Years A Slave.

Am I being pedantic if I was miffed by the beating AZT took in Dallas Buyers Club? One sentence in tiny script at the end defending it wasn't enough for me. I understand AZT was a stand-in for the government's appalling lack of action and compassion and foresight in the film, but it was such an odd thing to villify given what we know now in hindsight.

Not in that particular movie, but an internet search shall reveal what you seek.

Because of the earlier mention of L.A. Confidential in this thread, when it came on Encore today, I had to watch it. And, even 17 years after it came out, I am still impressed by it. Hard to believe it lost to Titanic for best picture.

Finally saw the new Cap and was not disappointed. Cap: The First Avenger was right up there with Iron Man and this sequel certainly IMO is the best second installment of the Marvel universe. Like OOP, I knew a bit of the twists going in and thought they were done wonderfully. Winter Soldier was done great, same with Black Widow and Falcon.

Just an absolute blast of a movie.

  8. Watched Hunger Games Catching Fire.

I wasn't thrilled after the first movie. And the second was more of the same, except it didn't end. It just stopped. Did they just cut the the movie off? What the hell kind of "ending" was that?

    Anyway ...

I am waiting on the arrival of Harry and Hendersons for my kids to watch this weekend.

After it sat in front of the TV for almost two months, finally watched Nebraska. First, June Squibb was fantastic and the movie was fun, funny and actually heartfelt. We thoroughly enjoyed it and I completely understand why it was a best picture nominee. Also, now that we've seen Nebraska, we've finally watched all of the best picture nominees. I still contend that Dallas Buyers Club was the best with 12 Years A Slave a very close second. All in all, 2013 definitely was a pretty good year for movies.

    French film - The Past

While emotionally driven, this is an extremely slow-paced film without a compelling plot - just an elongated storyline about why a guy's depressed wife attempted suicide amidst his affair with another married woman. It was well-acted, but also hard to keep your attention.

    Wes Anderson's latest.

You really have to like him -- but I do.

You said it. Fought that war a million times.

Fought it this past season with Gravity. Much more deserving than 12 Years. If that was McQueen's ultimate effort, I wish him a lot of luck. He'll need it.
