He's had pretty much all the flesh and some of his organs burned away and survived. He's fallen from planes. He made it through an atomic bomb exploding when he was pretty much at the center of the detonation. Short of severing his head or using a special blade, there's just about no way to kill him when he has his healing factor.

Speaking of Hawkeye, I caught "The Bourne Legacy" on cable today. Better than I expected.

Exactly. His ability to heal seems to have grown over the years, perhaps too much.

The current comic story really does seem to be pure laziness. They gave him his memories back, then stole some away, specifically all of the ones with his girlfriend so they could get rid of her without killing off another one of his lovers. Finally had him get what should have been a final and definitive victory over Sabertooth only to erase it with some vague, stupid explanation. Even had him try to change and open the Jean Grey School (on the former location of Xavier's).

Definitely seems like they are making him vulnerable and killing him off for lack of any other ideas.

I thought it was delightfully bad. And Tom Lennon as a lawnmowing zombie and Anna Kendrick are enough to make me watch any movie.

Anybody see Amazing Spider-Man 2 yet? Mrs. OOP and I may end up going tonight. So far, the reviews don't seem to be great. Sounds like another superhero movie sequel falling into the trap of stuffing in too much.

I'm probably gonna see Spidey 2 eventually despite the lukewarm reviews. Liked the first one, but it does seem they're overdoing it by cramming three villains into the sequel.

I've heard AS2 being compared to Spidy 3 and Howard the Duck.

I'll wait for the BluRay rental.

  8. Argo ... How the hell did this win best picture?
That was a purely forgettable film.
    Tense? No, not really.
    Action? None.
    Comedy? None.
Drama? Ok, but the players were all low-level folks. And was it really that dramatic? Affleck's character was Iran for two days?
The characters were shallow and one-dimensional. Why invest in them? Affleck's character was the only one that even scratched the surface on a second level.
At the end, he came home to his wife (who we did not know) and the embrace. Why do I care?

It also suffered from Titanic syndrome ... as in, I knew how it ended.

Was it a good movie? Meh.
Best picture? No. Way. Not even close.
This isn't even one of Affleck's best movies.

I think it won awards because Hollywood got to pat itself on the back by pointing out it had helped the government and been patriotic.

This being a summer of many comic book movies, including X-Men: Days of Future Past coming up in two weeks, Mrs. OOP got to choose last night. That meant Amazing Spider-Man 2 was out and we went to see The Other Woman.

The movie is entirely too long (1 hour, 49 minutes). Less would have been more. Overall, it wasn't bad. Some funny moments. Leslie Mann is very funny. Cameron Diaz was fine. (I've never been a big fan). Kate Upton does what she is supposed to do, which is look hot in a bikini. Some of the humor was just silly and the plot was predictable, especially with what was given away in the trailers.

Not something I would choose to see on my own, but far from the worst thing Mrs. OOP has chosen for us.

Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay.
I recently completed the seven-DVD COSMOS (1980) series, then soon after decided to watch this documentary on the famous card magician.
What an amazing coincidence when a photo was briefly displayed wherein Jay is shown with Carl Sagan discussing throwing cards on Mars.
    Unbelievable timing.

I'll rent Spider-Man, but no way I'm paying $10 to see it. I'm just not that into the character. I have the first two on DVD, received as gifts, and rarely watch them. I thought they were okay when I was younger and saw them with friends, but now they come off as so corny. I almost walked out on the third and haven't seen it since. I rented the last one and asked, "Why the reboot? This is almost the exact same film I've already seen." It's kind of why I enjoyed "Man of Steel" but wasn't blown away. It's just "Superman" and "Superman II" squeezed together with more action.

Some of the basics were there in the reboot, but there were major differences. Also, Garfield and Stone have great chemistry. According to the reviews, their relationship is the best part of the sequel.

The funny part is the movie is well over two hours even after they cut a significant subplot (Mary Jane as a romantic rival for Gwen) even though they had already shot the scenes.
