I saw Blue Ruin over the weekend. That's one of the best thrillers I've seen in a long time. The director made masterful use of silence as a way to amp up the suspense. There were a couple small, slow parts, but for the most part it was very well done. Also, definitely not for the squeamish considering a couple scenes of self-surgery are tough to watch.

No doubt. The 1980 version was cheesy on purpose. Works well that way.

This came-and-went from my 'hood indie theater before I knew anything about it...the more I read about it, the more pissed I am I missed it!

Eva Green, generally, is terrific. Gives a shit about every role. Goes into ACTING mode a bit too much, but that's better than being consistently opaque or playing the same person in every role.

    Alma-
If she had cut her teeth in French cinema her acting would be better.
I think I read somewhere she eschewed French-speaking films because she felt them a trifle hoity-toity.
Which is fine, but that's sort of the whole medium in France. She already seems to like artsier movies, so it doesn't make sense.

It's too bad my first impression of Eva Green was in the awful Starz series Camelot. Also, my first intro to the completely horrid "actor" known as Jamie Campbell Bower. That Camelot series was so bad, for me, every time I see Green, I am reminded of it and it spoils any role she has for me. That said, I did enjoy her nakedness in the 300 sequel.

I've always liked Green, and am excited to watch her in the new series Penny Dreadful.

Thanks to Showtime On Demand, I watched that last week. Solid start to the series.

On an unrelated note, I am seeing a screening of the new Godzilla movie tonight. I love Bryan Cranston, so hopefully this won't suck.

About to watch "Secret Life of Walter Mitty," on suggestion from a co-worker.
Will post drunken thoughts later...or maybe hungover thoughts tomorrow.

The new Godzilla movie was so much fun. Bryan Cranston provides great acting as usual in a well-developed creature feature filled with action. The entire audience, including myself and some Rams players and personnel, seeing the screening in St. Louis enjoyed it. There were three separate applause moments during the movie and then one when it was finished. I've never understood applause at a movie, but it is a clear sign that the audience approves of a film. I did not clap in the theater, but I definitely recommend Godzilla as a fun night out at the movies. Kid-friendly and my female friend liked it too. Not just an adult male movie.

Thanks to Netflix streaming, I saw an oldie but a goodie tonight: "Dr. Strangelove: (and the long subtitle)." I didn't find it laugh-out-loud funny (although the IMDB trivia section said the actors had trouble keeping straight faces during the "right hand" scene near the end). But I did appreciate the sharp satire, and god, Peter Sellers was so good. I love seeing Slim Pickens ride a nuclear warhead to oblivion. Overall, well worth your hour and a half.

As Cool As I Am. Latest in a long line of teenage growing up/finding self amongst angst movies, but added throw in of mom (Claire Daines) and dad (James Mardsen) having marriage fall apart. Decent acting by all, but same old general plot.
