Their 2008 fiscal year ended in October, and they reported earnings a couple of weeks ago. Not sure how much money they "wanted to make," but, if I recall, they would have made more than 10 percent profit except for the massive writedowns on the value of their assets.

Same here at my Lee shop. No raises, no 401K contribution, slight cutback on circulation area. We keep getting told our paper is making money, but now none of those doing the grunt work will reap any rewards.

    Bring on grad school....

Wage freeze here, no 401(k) contribution, blah blah blah, same thing at my paper. Five fucking years of my life down the drain and I still can't pull in more than $29K. What a fucking joke.

And as a side rant, I'm sick of this bullshit about "be glad you even have a job." Yeah, I'm glad I have a job. But that doesn't mean that I'm going to let the fucking corporate culture use that against me. I'm not working the unpaid overtime. I'm not shaving miles off my expense report if I have to drive them to make games. I'm glad to be working, but I'm nobody's fucking slave.

Anyone who works (and this includes beat writers forced to take their furloughs midseason) during their unpaid week off is a sucker. How your job gets done in your absence is not your problem. You do the best you can to tie up loose ends before you split, but that's your only obligation.

But then you don't really care for the readers, do you, if you don't work off the clock. And where's the take one for the team attitude?

Great post. Let's face it. We chose a profession that does not value employees a bit. They allow nicknamed assholes post comments at the end of our articles blasting us because that is what people do in an anonymous forum. They do what South Bend is doing and degrade reporters by making them write down everything they do all day (great idea assholes, have fun talking about it at your 10 a.m. meetings in Notre Dame land as you sip your Starbucks and fail to fill out your own minute by minute reports on YOUR day). They have it down pat to where you start at a certain salary and will not make more than 1 percent the following year and down the line. So a kid starts at 25,000. In five years will he even make 30,000? Doubtful.
This is a disgraceful business. Sweatshops.
Thanks for your post. I enjoyed it!

#81 you are right, but what do you all think about the w2 situation? have they really mailed them out? I don't think so. When you call davenport. They are constantly stating they mailed them off on wed 01/28/09. It is now 02/06/09 and no one have received theirs yet. Even knowing they could be fined, but being so close to bankrupted One more bill will not hurt. It is no way, should it take 10 days to receive mail in the United States. You do the math. Ka--n is a fucking lier. I don't believe they mailed them off at all. We can contact the IRS and file an complaint, which it may not help, being that they don't give a fuck, because they are going under.

  12. I got my W2 last week. What are you blathering about?
