He's also freelanced for Men's Journal. Oddly, the piece I saw was a review of slow-pitch softball bats.

Some of the writing from that series is excellent. I enjoyed it much more than anything he wrote for Deadspin. I consider Will a sports fan and a writer. The two don't necessarily need to be intertwined.

    Will,
Welcome to the Main Stream Media -- ruining the world for over 100 years. Sinking like a stone the last 10. (You might want to brush up on the third person.)
    Love,

You're not going to stand by your comment even though he pretty much entirely refuted it? Nice.

and that's why there's so much animosity towards him on this thread. he's seen as one of the flag-bearers for the decline of old media. the whole "bloggers live in mommy's basement" thing is a defense mechanism used by middle aged - and older - newspaper reporters who refuse to consider adapting to the new media landscape.

I agree with your thought on the reasoning for some of the animosity here, leo1. But I think you're probably wrong to accuse any reporters these days of refusing to consider adapting to the new-media landscape.

I doubt it's even possible for anybody, in any news room right now, to really refuse to consider that in the current climate, and still continue to stay in the business.

Sure, some people may still be kicking and screaming a bit. But that can be attributed to a deep sense of anger and sadness over what's happening to a traditional, worthwhile mission/business that we -- yes, we -- love and appreciate, more than it is because of any actual intent to be obstinately and overtly combative or unwilling to try, learn or change.

Whether they are happy about it or not, people are doing all of that, every day.

Walk into any office, in fact, and you'll see myriad people, of all ages, working in, training for, and trying their darnedest to learn -- and execute -- new things, many of which they never dreamed they'd ever do, or be asked to do, in an effort to keep up with the aforementioned ever-changing landscape, which is uncertain enough, and changing fast enough, to be a challenge even to those aged 30 and under.

I'll admit, that's most of the reason for my convictions.

There's a lot of truth in that. But I'll bet there are at least 100 guys in mommy's basement for every one like a Leitch. Plus, there are many who fall between the two extremes. In fact, had the series of tubes been in place when Leitch was 16, I'd like to think he would have been one of those kids in mommy's basement. Of course, he probably would have been surfing midget-related porn sites as much as blogging. But you get the idea.

"She packed up and moved to Vermont, to be with the birds and trees and things," is a perfectly heartsick, passive-aggressive, still-in-love-but-trying-not-to-be-anymore line -- both honest and true.
