Orlando Cabrera? I know he gets to more balls. Not sure what kind of defensive year he had though.

Maybe, I didn't see all that much of him, but I don't think of him as great, certainly not great enough (Ozzie, Viszquel) to overcome the fact that he can't hit, which shouldn't matter but always has - can't blame that on Jeter. Fact is, while this was once a position that had tremendous competition, it's now pretty weak & I think Jeter, with his improvement is a very defendable choice, shocking as it seems.

Today's stupid NY tabloid story... find me anything in here that indicates this is even remotely possble:

Anybody know what Baltimore is looking to do in the offseason?

Lots of older and/or broken down parts still there (Mora, Gibbons) and one big steroid (Vitamin B12) freak in Tejada. The pitching seems like it will be OK down the line if Cabrera can harness his wildness. Loewen's going to be good eventually. Markakis was a revelation this year.

    Is Tejada immovable?

And that's not to mention Bedard, who really pitched well after a midseason slump.

By next year or the year after, Mazzone will get Cabrera to get his act together. If Penn is as good as advertised, and Ray (the other revelation) keeps it up, and they can avoid mistakes like Millar they might surprise us all & be good before Toronto, especially if they blow a Wells trade.

Yeah Guy, for once, it seems at least, there's a little hope in Baltimore with a bunch of young guys who can grow into a pretty decent team. I just hope Angelos doesn't muck it up by trading great talent away for a big name. The O's aren't one player away. A big-name quick fix isn't going to be the answer.

The O's "talk" has been to get a "frontline" type of starter - although this more means a No. 3 kind of guy like Ted Lilly, not a Barry Zito or Jason Schmidt. They also want a big bat - like a Carlos Lee and Alfonso Soriano. I believe they are expected to make a big run at Lee. We'll see. Would be nice to see them entertain that Angels offer for Tejada again ... but they really have no one to plug the hole at SS.

And Penn showed last year he's not ready for the majors - at least in the rotation - in '07. However, Bedard-Cabrera-Loewen is loaded with potential.

Well, if the subject is who should win, offense doesn't count, even though we all know it does in the real voting.

Cabrera had one more error (16 to 15), but they had the same fielding percentage (.975) and he makes more plays than Jeter, so he would have been my choice. He's not a terrible hitter, either... just not in Jeter's class with the bat.

BYH and outofplace, I assume you know this but let me provide a reminder, just so blame is focused in the right direction ... Gold Gloves are voted on by ML managers and coaches. So any complaints should be directed at them and not at writers.

    Thank you,
    Casty

Casty, I knew the writers didnt vote for the GG. I was never criticizing writers for that choice.
