Well, except for the local TV contracts for exhibition, errr, preseason games.

Show me where I said anything about local TV revenue, douchebag.
Locally GENERATED revenue in the Mediocre Football Leaue consists of radio, advertising, stadium naming rights, signage, etc... all of which goes directly into rich owners' pockets instead of going to improving the mediocre product that is being put on the field every Sunday.
So it's better than the Jimmy Jones' and Dan Snyder's of the world make more money that it is to put a better product on the field.
    Great, have it your way.

If teams are already spending up to the cap or close to it, how exactly would spending more money make the product better?

Hell, even if you significantly raise the cap, how is it better? There is only so much talent to go around.

You're gonna tell mee OOP that's is teams had more oney to spedn they couldn't pay a better backup QB that Seneca Wallace or Andrew Walter?
There are veteran players who become "salary-cap casualities" (god, how insane is that) and never get signed again because teams are up against the cap and can't afford them.
If you don't think salary caps do anyting other than dillute the product and line the owners' pockets, then I give up this debate.

How does it DILUTE the product?

The players are the same... they ain't going to Canada for the salary cap.

And, are you still counting up the teams within 100 points of .500 in baseball, and then in the NFL.

Being within .100 of .500 is irrelevant when one sport has 162 games (65 wins puts you within .100 points of .500 but you still suck) and the other has 16 (7 wins puts you within .100 points of .500 and you have short at the playoffs.)

Please give me one name of a decent quarterback who does not have a job. And if you say Jeff George or Tommy Maddox, then it is me who will be giving up.

As a Padres (and Barfield) fan, this caught me by surprise ...

The Indians sent infielder Kevin Kouzmanoff, their minor league player of the year, and right-hander Andrew Brown to San Diego for the 23-year-old Barfield, who played in 150 games as a rookie last season.
Barfield batted .280 with 32 doubles, 13 homers and 58 RBIs in helping the Padres win the NL West. The son of former AL home run champion Jesse Barfield also had 21 steals and scored 72 times.
In addition, Barfield's .987 fielding percentage _ he had nine errors in 684 total chances _ was third best among NL second basemen.

Nice trade for the Tribe. Kouz may turn out to be a solid major leaguer, but he couldn't play 2B and the Tribe needed help there. Basically they turned Kouz into a second baseman, and a pretty nice one at that.

    No... it's wholly relevant.

If this mindless horseshit prattle you guys engage in were true, the NFL would have the higher count.

I read the reason the Padres did this was to go after Marcus Giles, but is that really a smart move? Barfield looked like a pretty solid player and he was young and cheap, so why would you trade him?

  12. Wow - I'm shocked by this trade. The Padres let fan favorite Mark Loretta go because of Barfield. Maybe Loretta is back in the plans for the Padres? Giles could be another possibility to reunite with his brother (its 50/50 I think for Atlanta to bring Marcus back). Maybe Japanese star Akinori Iwamura is another option at nd for the Padres?

It should also be noted that the Padres just cut ties to Dave Roberts because they want a middle of the line-up bat. Could one or both of the Indians prospects be used to trade for Gary Sheffield or another big bat?

From the Indians perspective - great move They just filled the need at 2nd without taking a gamble on Akinori Iwamura. They also have Andy Marte at 3rd - so Kevin Kouzmanoff (also a 3rd baseman) was expendable.
