  1. Andrew brown was out of minor league options - does that mean that the Padres have to keep him on the 25-man roster and up with the big club?

Pretty much. Or hope he pitches so badly in spring that he slips thru waivers on his way back to Triple-A.

I'm not sure any team does a better job of building a bullpen every year than the Padres. Too bad Kevin Towers has to answer to that ninny Sandy Alderson.

Why in the world would the Padres trade someone young, cheap and with a lot of upside to go after players who, though slightly more proven, are far more expensive, old and on the downside of their career?

Do they think he's a steroid user or something?

  4. Let me ask you to clarify something and let me clarify something from my post.

I'm assuming you are referring to Marcus Giles. It should be noted that Marcus is just 28 - so the age difference with Barfield isn't that great. Giles would be much more expensive tha Barfield though and the padres don't throw around money - except when it comes to 3rd base.

That brings me to my clarification - I was thinking the Padres would flip Brown to the Yankees (maybe with some other B level prospect) for Sheffield. The Padres have a hole at 3rd and Kouzmanoff would seem to be a long term solution to a hole where the padres have tried to stick washed up old guys like Vinnie Castilla in the past.

DD, maybe the Padres traded Barfield because he threw his dad down the stairs.

Oh wait. That was his brother, yet another fine person drafted by the Mets.

That trade doesn't make sense on the surface, but I'd guess it was done to facilitate something else. It would not surprise me at all if Giles were somewhere besides Atlanta, where Martin Prado was impressive in his debut this year and made Giles' departure more likely. The Braves will have to cut money somewhere so they can spend a little more on pitching.

As a Pad fan, this is a headscratcher.
Barfield is only 23 [a five-year difference between he and MGiles]. He, Khalil and AGonzo could basically make up the SD infield for the next five years.

Granted, I don't know anything about the Indians prospects.

I hope this leads to bigger and better things. (/crossingmyfingersasalooserpadresfan)

And Giles is slightly more durable than Chris Chandler.

Maybe Barfield was about to flunk a drug test.

If that was the case they probably wouldn't want to replace him, albeit indirectly, with Marcus Giles.

  11. FWIW - the rumor is Scott Linebrink for Marcus Giles

Linebrink would be good inurance against Wickman going south as a closer
