Of course, percentage stats are misleading when it comes to players who are injured a lot. They don't reflect how often he is out of the lineup.

The thing that would concern me with Drew is he actually was relatively healthy in 2006 and his numbers were merely solid. Not the kind of monster year you might expect from projecting out his numbers during the injury-plagued seasons or looking at 2004, the other time he stayed healthy.

Wasn't it Tony LaRussa who had made comments about Drew not caring enough?

I have articulated my reasons. His teammates, generally speaking, don't think he works hard or cares about improving. You don't agree with me. That's your prerogative.

JD Drew will be 31 at the start of next season. He's got one 500-AB season, one 30-homer season, one 100-RBI season, one 100-run season, one full season in which he's collected more BBs than Ks (he had more BBs than Ks in 2005, when he played in 72 games) and one season in which he's batted .300 over more than 400 ABs (hit .323 in 375 ABs in 2001). I disagree he's heading into his peak years, if anything, he's in the midst of them right now and will begin sliding within a year or two.

Maybe he'll beat the odds and Father Time and have his best years post-30 like Jim Edmonds, who is listed as Drew's most similiar batter thru age 30. But Edmonds already had four 500-AB seasons thru his age-30 season.

As mustard notes, his most comparable player on baseball-reference is Trot Nixon, who is viewed as a prime candidate to fall off the face of the Earth over the next two yearse, and Richard Hidalgo, who already has. Fourth on the list is Aubrey Huff, who will sign the worst contract of the off-season, presuming someone doesn't step up with five years for Drew.

Anyone who offers Drew five years is certifiably insane. I'm sure Boras will find that team, he usually does.

  4. Is Jim Bowden still in DC? He's certifiably insane.

Yes he is. And he'll probably have money to burn after Soriano goes elsewhere.

Stat GMs love Drew. His OPS+ of 125 is better than Lee and better than Soriano. Plus, he's a CF (when he feels like it). Drew will get his five years.

San Diego if the Padres don't land Sheffield?

The Detroit Tigers have acquired Gary Sheffield from the New York Yankees for three righthanded pitching prospects, the Tigers announced Friday. In return for Sheffield, the Tigers sent Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett to New York. Detroit agreed to a two-year contract extension with Sheffield through the 2009 season. http://www.sportsjournalists.com/forum/forums/13/

Interesting. Now Sheffield becomes the Tigers' problem child.

Don't know the Detroit pitchers in the deal. Are they prospects?

Sheffield to the Tigers, huh? Can he play first for them? Seems like they're pretty well set in the OF. Or will he just sit around and DH all season?

I see Sheffield as part-time DH, part-time OF who'll get his 500 at-bats, bat fourth, drive in 100-plus runs and hit 30-plus homers. Leyland had Sheffield in Florida, too.

So what's the over/under on how long before Sheffield starts griping about Dombrowski's disrespectful negotiating tactics? I'm going to guess 8/1/2007
