I'm shocked that Chris hasn't brought up the Manny to the Dodgers rumor...
right after the Red Sox sign JD Drew!

Honestly, doesn't 3 years/44 mil seem a little much for Schmidt? He's turning 34 in January. 14.6 mil a season seems a little high.

It's not my money, so I don't care. Would love to see him in a Cubs uniform.

And it's not quite as stupid as the Yankees paying $25 mill for negotiating rights to a guy who Cashman said last week is a fourth or fifth starter, at best!

But I get the feeling that it's overpaying for a pitcher who's thrown a lot of innings the last five seasons. With the number of innings on the arm, I can't help but feel something bad will happen to him next season.

He's already had arm surgery. Ever since, he's been extremely durable. There's nothing wrong with throwing 200 innings per season. If only the Cubs had three others who could (Zambrano's also a horse), then they'd be in good shape.

Cubs deny offering Schmidt huge deal

An Internet report that the Cubs were offering San Francisco free-agent pitcher Jason Schmidt as much as $45 million for three years is unfounded, sources said Tuesday night.

The Cubs are not believed to have made a solid offer, certainly not at those figures.

The team, however, does have interest in the 33-year-old right-hander and has talked to his agents several times, knowing it might take more money to lure him to the Midwest from the West Coast.

The favorites in the Schmidt derby are the Dodgers, who have money to spend, and Seattle, which is near where Schmidt grew up

Ok, I can see them trying to get him for 10-11 mil, and I think that would be a good deal. Good info Doc.
