I hope there's a dot com bidding war for her. She's every bit the writer that Reilly and the other print defectors are, and she deserves the big payday and wider audience.

I like Olson plenty, and dislike plenty of what Reilly has done in recent years.

But I vehemently disagree with you here.

    De gustibus non est disputandum.

    It's a matter of taste.

  5. For what it's worth, I heard the same thing regarding Lisa stepping down. It's a shame - she was the best writer on that staff.

I wish her luck wherever she ends up. She won't be out of a job for very long.

Has the NY Post jumped on this story yet? They love to do the News' laundry on Page 6 whenever possible.

Quitting over the Lupica stunt in Green Bay and how the desk treated her that night -- and the apparent lack of follow-up from Carter or his bosses -- is a better reason to quit than being left off the Super Bowl coverage team. Former is all about professionalism (and lack of), latter is more about ego or appearances.

Both, in a 1-2 punch, is too much to endure, I guess.

On the contrary, I would think when the home team is in the Super Bowl and the paper sends 35 people to the game and you're not one of them even though you've written extensively about said team all season, you could easily see that as an indication of where you stand at the paper. And if you're secure enough in yourself that you know you'll be working again soon (or have strong enough connections to make some good money freelancing for awhile), I can see that being the nudge that pushes you out the door.

That reminds me of Mike Fisher's exit from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram several years ago. Fisher, who was the S-T's national NFL writer at the time, had been having various disagreements with the SE and AME/Sports for months, and when they decided who would be going to cover the Super Bowl, Fisher didn't make the list. So he storms into the AME's office and they have it out.

Finally, after a lengthy argument, she tells Fisher the paper can only send five writers and the ones going are the ones management decided will do the best job covering the game. He says, ``So you're telling me I'm not one of the five best people at this paper to cover the Super Bowl?'' She says yes. To which Fisher replies, ``Lady, I'm one of the five best people in the country to cover the Super Bowl.'' Then he turns and walks out, ending his tenure with the S-T.

Fisher told that story on the air on his radio show shortly afterward, when he was clearly still pissed. There used to be a link to that show on the Internet, but I don't think it exists anymore. Too bad. It was a classic. I listened to it several times, and when he delivered the money quote, in the requisite indignant tone, it never failed to crack me up.

    Keith Kelly.

The problem with Kelly is that he used to have good sources in the News newsroom, but they're all gone. He hasn't had a good item on the inner workings of the DN for months now, just the occasional idle speculation about the editor and owner ripped from Greenslade or the NY Observer. I really doubt KK ever had any friends in the sports department (at either the Post or the DN).

So I'm sure what he has will be mostly rehashing the same type of half-baked nonsense that appears on this thread and TBL.

    Keith Kelly's column:

A couple things I noticed. Lisa didn't quit "in a huff." She was in the office several hours the day she resigned and several hours again this week. Everything seemed amicable between her and Leon. And the insinuation she wasn't sent to the Super Bowl because of her past issues with the Patriots is bizarre. I know Lisa has covered two or three of their recent Super Bowls for the NYDN and I believe she even wrote a column praising the team's turnaround. I think she mentioned she was friendly with the Kraft family and they had sent something to her brother's unit in Iraq.

    Thanks for stopping by, Mike.

And, after 2 failed radio shows, where is Mr. Fisher now?

Mike Fisher left the S-T but the S-T was happy to see him go. He had become an egotistical nightmare of an employee.

His departure is a good anecdote but comparing him to Lisa Olson is a bigger insult to Lisa than what happened to her in the Patriots locker room.
